I've officially passed halfway through the Alif-Baa book!!! I've learnt so much so far and my reading skills of arabic are great so far! DOTSUB I had a play around the website www.dotsub.com and found it to be very useful. Not much Tagalog/Filipino on that site, but there were plenty of French as well as Arabic videos with accompanying subtitles in L2. I found that many words were going over my head and I was feeling quite passive with the text, especially with words that I did not know. Recently, I have been reading French online newspapers using gTranslate to help me with any unknown vocabulary and I noticed that it really helped me get a feel for the words and the sentence. Doing my LR today, I felt I wanted to try out gTranslate, instead of using the often unhelpful parallel English text that I have. So my personalised LR steps were: 1. Read over L2 (French) Paragraph. 2. Find any words or phrases that I don't understand, and use gTranslate (Google Translate) in order to know the translation in L1 (English). Get a feel for the meaning of the paragraph as a whole in its L2 form. 3. Listen to the L2 (French) audio while reading the L2 (French) Paragraph. 4. Listen only to the L2 (French) audio. I'll try these steps from now on and see how they go for the next few weeks. I liked the feeling of being able to understand the audio on its own, as well as the feeling of understanding the paragraphs as a whole.
