For a language that it that similar to English, I would not recommend Rosetta Stone. In my opinion, it is good, but I think that it is overpriced. How soon do you want to know Swedish? Is it for a specific event (a trip to Sweden, for example), or just for fun? If you need to know it quickly, then I suppose RS might be alright. However, I do believe that self-study would be less expensive and potentially just as efficient. LiveMocha (www.LiveMocha.com) should be releasing a Swedish course in the near future. Their courses are free and are very good. There is also a bounty of books to learn Swedish--try the "Teach Yourself Series;" it's generally very good. I hope this helps!

Rosetta stone is good as a vocab builder, but that's about it. It's not worth buying and you can probably use it for free at the library.

Not to take away from the helpfulness of your advice in any way, but I would put a counter-recommendation on Teach yourself Swedish. Usually the TY series is pretty good, but I've got only bad reviews on the Swedish one. The Colloquial Swedish colloquial swedish is better and is the one I'm using right now. There's also the FSI Swedishfsi swedish that you can download for free, but it's a little hard for a beginner so it might be better to run through after finishing colloquial, if you want a review. If you need more help with grammar or want a more comprehensive look at the language, I heard this book Essentials of swedish grammar is nice.

When you're done, just read swedish news articles and listen to swedish radio, to get used to reading and hearing swedish. Livemocha.com is a good place to look for language exchange partners to start practicing speaking it and their courses are a lot like rosetta stone,I've heard, so if they release a swedish one, you can use that a vocab builder.

Edit: huh, I guess linking to Amazon and the digitized fsi project site is considered spam.

It's okay, joha. That frightened me the first time too. Since that is your first post, you can still post relevant URLs but you cannot directly link to another site using BBCode.

Personally, I'm a big fan of the Linguaphone series and there is a course on Swedish. It is a tad pricey but I believe it's worth it. Good luck with Swedish. :D

Pimsleur is good for basics, easily available too. The only trouble is its very short and just gives you some bare basics.
I'm still looking for a better method to try and cram Swedish into my head.

So... Since this thread is already about learning Swedish...

Anyone mind making it a Swedish resources dump?
By this I mean where one can get texts and audio and all sorts of goodies in and about Swedish. I'd be especially interested in Swedish music that's actually in Swedish, as all of the Swedish music I've found yet (before I started studying it) is in English.

Anyways, that would help me greatly, I've got Pimsleur and FSI, but I'd like to find some texts (maybe parallel?) that would be good for a learner, or a good source of audio (like a streaming radio broadcast, maybe?). If it's convenient for you to drop that stuff off here, I'm a student and thus should be doing other things when I'm studying Swedish instead :( Boo School!
Thanks in advance!

Are you talking about piratebay.org :p

Well I figure you haven't missed on www.svtplay.se Swedish TV programs in internet.
anytime.tv4.se   another online TV, more entertaining, some are not free. Look for the tab "Gratis" for free stuff.

playrapport.se for News

http://www.sr.se/ for Radio

Easy Swedish for the learning pupil:
