First, quite a number of you have clearly not read "A Room of One's Own" by Virginia Woolf.
The book explains the problems women face when they desire to follow intellectual pursuits but are constrained by societal rules. To understand this issue at it's core, I highly recommend it.
Second, I am a 43 year old woman who had been highly constrained by American society as well as my husband, to stay at home with our children. When the divorce occurred my incredible focus was then on securing steady work to feed and clothe the children while he as the divorced father had ample time to date, socialize, change jobs and homes repeatedly. This is a normal occurance.
I am now in university, majoring in German after having reached a B1 comprehension proficiency in it while studying it for 2 years only one or two hours a week in between a 9 hour workday(system admin), a 1 hour per way commute(could not afford to live closer to work), and child rearing responsibilities.
I had to quit my job in order to pursue this path.
My minor will be Russian.
