Aya, your quote "YouTube performing monkeys" is not fair, because Prof. Arguelles and the others invest a lot of work in their to inspire others in their language learning for example by explaining their learning techniques. To show off is not their intention, as far as I know Prof. Arguelles and Moses Mc Cormick. As I cannot meet them personally, I feel at least inspired by their videos. As I have been a language learner doing classes all my life, I can estimate how people perform in classes. I don't see any difference between the PERFORMANCE of men and women there. My opinion is also is that the language learning abilties of men and women are equal, generally speaking. If you want to become a polyglot, this is always a personal choice. It depends on how you learn and what you do with languages. People in my adult evening courses only wanted to go on holidays in for example France or Turkey. And they wanted to have a relaxing evening whithout any hard work. They did not study at home and didn't learn the vocabulary. Grammar they found boring. I couldn't see much intellectual interest. If we're going to make sweeping generalisations, one could point to the large number of men who try to learn Japanese because they're obsessed with anime and manga or those men who learn Thai or Mandarin to "get chicks". ;) I don't know any women who have learnt (or tried learning) a language just to chat about food or a handbag and, conversely, I can't see why it would be a problem for a women to enjoy French cuisine or Italian fashion and not know a word in either language. Not everyone is interested in learning a foreign language, let alone several. I know plenty of women AND men who are happy being monolingual. We all have our own tastes and abilities... My language classes at university were quite evenly balanced in terms of gender and performance. There was one man who spoke flawless Mandarin by the end of the 4 years but we put it down to the fact that he always had a Chinese girlfriend to practice with and spent every summer holiday in China or Taiwan. In some ways, it seemed that the men in my class had the advantage during our year abroad as they had to fend off the number of women who wanted to talk and be with them. None of us girls could find a Chinese boyfriend.. ;) Back on topic....I can't really say why there seem to be fewer female polyglots. I've met a lot of women who can speak one, maybe two, foreign languages fluently but I haven't met many women offline who can speak several languages well, let alone fluently. Having said that, I have an Indian colleague who marvels at the fact that I studied Mandarin and can speak Dutch, even though she can speak English, Bengali, Hindi and several other Indian languages. Maybe it just depends on your circle of friends and acquintances. This forum is not representative of the whole world, after all. :) 1 person has voted this message useful |
