The Greater Toronto Area:
English
French
Punjabi
Cantonese
Mandarin
There are other languages with a significant presence, but I wouldn't include them on this list. Italian, for example, is the most spoken language at work apart from English, but the vast majority of Italian speakers in the area are now bilingual. French is useful for employment and the last three are important when dealing with immigrant groups that still have a significant number of members who are not comfortably bilingual.

In Washington state, it would probably be
1. English
2. Spanish
3. Korean
4. Japanese
5. Vietnamese or maybe Mandarin
A few months ago I saw an advertisement requesting translators that also knew the following languages: Arabic, Portuguese, Russian and Ukrainian, but I think the first five languages above are far more common.

In the Hampshire region of England, UK
English and sign language (impressive on a c.v)
Polish (The greater part of immigrants)
French (Very close by for a cheap holiday)
Arabic (if you want to write a complaignt to a mosque lloll, no seriously there are a lot of speakers here)
Chinese (again immigrants)
So as you can see, the main immigrant languages in my country are Polish, Urdu, Arabic, Bengali, Punjabi, Chinese.

You all seem to be listing the languages most widely spoken by immigrants. But are these the "best" languages for someone to learn? You might have more chances to speak it, but it might be utterly useless for employment for example.
