So, I take it you know "her" personally and that "she" is handicapped in some way? I think not. One would have to put a lot of effort (and I think "she" has) into butchering English in the way "she" has. If "she" had any credibility, he blew it...

There are the
significant differences, and I do not believe that the Flemish people understand the
spoken Dutch from The Netherlands perfectly.

As a native dutch speaker from Flanders, yes we can! we spend hours in front of the TV
watching Dutch channels (from NL) making fun of their accent, but we understand all of
it... every word, even the colloquialisms (which we find very funny often)

Well sorry, but I don't.

And yet both Dutch and Flemish are listed as your native languages :)

Yes. :) I was referring to the ' we spend hours in front of the TV watching Dutch
channels (from NL) making fun of their accent. '
I remember when I watched 'Baantjer' (you might know this series) on the VRT, I
couldn't understand a word of what they said. (but luckily it was subtitled).

Why is it listed as my native language? Because in fact it IS NOT A SEPARATE language.
It would be false to say Flemish is my native language, because officially it is not a
separate language. The written Dutch is almost equal to Flemish. The thing is that the
Flemish pronounce everything more in the French way, while the Dutch prefer the
English way. And this can lead to misunderstandings.

I was in Amsterdam a few weeks ago. I ran out of money, so I asked someone to show me
the way to the nearest bank. I had to ask beg my pardon for more than 4 times, till I
finally got what she meant. Is that normal??

Anyway. I'm anxious to see what you'll say about this.

Well, I guess the region I grew up in (East-Flanders, near border of Antwerp) the
spoken language among my generation (currently twenties) was not that dissimilar from
the standard one except for slang and the "soft g" my Dutch friends made fun of. I'm
not sure where you are from, because as I said before dialects in Flanders differ
considerably between regions in West-Flanders, East-Flanders, Brabant, etc.

I think you misunderstood some of my points, or maybe I did some of yours.

We both acknowledge that there are regional dialects which are quite different, we
both acknowledge that Flemish is not a separate language. What I am pointing out is
that there is no such thing as a "Flemish dialect/regional spoken language" or a
"Dutch (Nederlands) dialect/regional spoken language" since both within Flanders and
the Netherlands dialects are very diverse and dialects often cross the border between
the Netherlands and Flanders (e.g. Zeeuws Flanders, Limburg etc.)

Jar-ptitsa- What happened to "If you can't
spell it, don't write it"? Please read through your comments before posting them, your
spelling mistakes are ridiculous!

Your remark is uncalled for because you should have realised that those are not really
spelling mistakes but the result of a genuine handicap. She has as much right to be
heard as anyone else, so cut out your righteousness and pedantry and show a little
tolerance and understanding. Please.

How on Earth could he have known that it is because of a supposed handicap beforehand?
Really, please tell me. I'm curious.

Maybe you should cut out the righteousness.
