In the this era, extra effort has to be shown to learn many languages as all people say here many distractions are exist. however, internet can have both good or bad advantages in learning languages. It's just simply how we use and manage it. Self-discipline is a key

Exactly.. Paper works so much better than pdf. But at the same, mp3 is much better than cd.... but at the same time, cassette is better than cd :P
We have way too many distractions. Our lives are too free and at times I wish I lived very remotely so I could be less distracted.

People actually studied (reading, input, listening, drilling, memorizing, analyzing "inwardly digesting" information) and didn't waste time with 21st century learning/ multiple intelligences/ "sage on stage guide on side"/ study skills/ self esteem and all that other stuff :)

Yes apparently Lee Harvey Oswald learned Russian to the point where (apparently) only the slightest trace of a foreign accent was discernable. Don't know if he had Pimsleur and all of those things, but I am told Ipods were quite primitive in those days.

The reason you see older people using better grammar and a wider vocabulary in any language that they learned
(either natively or as an L2) is that they just did not have as many distractions as we do nowadays. If the average
German child were to learn English in the early 19th century, he would probably look forward to it after working.
They would not have any TV or any computers to distract them, and they were excited to sit down and study
because it was an escape from any other hardships. The reason for THAT is that life was simpler when they were
young students, and they used the time they had (they also might have feared the whip :O )

Nov. 17 - Dec. 30. I have bought myself two self-teaching Russian language books. I force myself to study 8 hours a day. I sit in my room and read and memorize words. All meals I take in my room. Rimma arranged that. It is very cold on the streets so I rarely go outside at all for this month and a half. I see no one, speak to no one except every now and then Rimma, who calls the ministry about me. Have they forgotten? During December, I paid no money to the hotel, but Rimma told the hotel I was expecting a lot of money from USA. I have $28 left. This month I was called to the passport office and met 3 new officials who asked me the same questions I answered a month before. They appear not to know me at all.

Wow, thanks for that. This is quite amazing, that's what I would call language dedication.
