This brings an interesting argument I had with a friend to my memory. My friend dreams
of being the president of Argentina (quite ambitious, but well, let her alone) and says
she doesn't need to speak English to do so. And I was like... Are you crazy? If you
ever want to travel, English is essential. But she was convinced that she didn't need
to speak English, and that she could deal with the US and other English-speaking
countries through interpreters. I said that I still thought that it was impossible that
somebody who didn't speak English could be president of Argentina. Then she said that
Obama didn't speak any other language. I didn't know at that time that Barack Obama
does speak Indonesian, and that obviously counts as other language.
My class mates often tell me that English is not important, and I always argue with
them. It does hurt me, taking in account that I take six weekly hours of classes (apart
from school) and am constantly practising. But I know that they are only jealous in the
bottom of their hearts because they don't speak English really well.

First I kill them, then I explain why they are wrong. Some days it just pays to be a sword.

With some forum members, it's difficult to tell whether they are male or female.
With you, icing death, it's not much of a stretch... ;)

Just so you know, the Brazilian president, Lula, can't speak English. To be quite honest, his Portuguese isn't top notch either. He relies on interpreters for his international travels.
So, even though it's not admirable or even advisable, it's possible to become a president even if you can't speak a word in English.
On a second thought, perhaps not in Argentina, where you don't have the same volume of uneducated voters, I believe. |

Well, Lula said that anyone who speaks other languages, especially English, is stupid and arrogant......the fact is that that fool wants his popularity among poorer to step up just coming up with such bullshits.....however, he's flying to Paris to spend some romantic days with his gross wife without having meetings with Sarkozy....hella contradition, no?

One thing I am really bothered by is when someone does the best they can with a foreign language overseas and the natives are insulted that you don't have a perfect accent, so they want to speak in your language with their imperfect accent - like it's OK for your language to be "butchered" but not theirs... Everyone should be happy that others choose to learn their language, over all the other languages they could have chosen to learn instead, and appreciate the effort. But I think it's really arrogant when someone thinks anyone who speaks their language should do it with a perfect accent but when they speak someone else's it doesn't have to be. As for how I'd feel if someone said my language was "ugly" I would be offended. Every language has elements that others would consider odd - it is a matter of perspective. For example, I don't understand why things should have a gender if they are not living creatures with an actual gender, but I wouldn't insult someone's language just because they use genders. I just let it be baffling to me and respect the fact that it makes sense to them. The only "language" I think is ugly is insults... in any language...

I've never believed that large numbers of people were learning English because it's so beautiful or musical. I think that any language is more beautiful when it is spoken well and uglier when it is spoken badly.
I used to think German was awfully harsh and guttural, and then a native speaker shared some German poetry with me.

I'm not insulted at all. I know American English isn't the prettiest language.
