Have done some Latin over the past few days.
Novam ecclesiam video. Parsona pueros novos vocat. Novus agricola est. Ego dimidium manerium filiabus predictis domini do. Ecclesia sancte Marie est. Ecclesia sancti Edwardi est. Predicta domina tenet dimidium mercatum nova carta. Dominice terre domini sunt. Dimidiam marcam predicto agricole damus. Procured a copy of Beeson's Medieval Latin primer--I am definitely not ready for it yet, but it's sitting on my desk as inspiration. Also did some Swahili, though just review of basic stuff. Oh, but I did return to Mfalme Twiga and decided to start over from the beginning and work slowly through the first 3 pages or so making sure I understood as much as possible. Went pretty well! I made a vocab list of words I did not know, which I'll be studying before taking another stab at reading it (this time quickly, without looking stuff up). Then I'll keep going and hopefully actually finish it! After thinking it over, I've decided that Russian, much as I want to learn it, will have to wait...for quite a while. Medieval Latin has somehow edged its way up my hitlist, and after working with it for a week, I want to study it pretty hard this year. And then I've also got Swahili, in which I'm aiming for basic fluency in several more months (currently bouncing around the advanced beginner level). Which means that Russian will be put on hold probably for two years. At the moment, I simply don't have time. I don't want to fail Chem, after all. Stumbled across a copy of the French movie Entre les Murs and watched it.
Made considerable progress in Latin. I'm between Lessons 5 and 6 in the tutorial, which is halfway through the 'Beginner' Section. I reviewed a lot today and will need to review a lot more, but I think I am slowly making progress. Also did a fair bit of work with Swahili. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

FRENCH: J'ai lu un chapitre de Harry Potter et L'Ordre du Phénix.
LATIN: Hic, hec, hoc. Not to mention hunc, hanc, huius, huic, hac, hi, he, hos, has, horum, harum, his. My head is about to explode. Also took a look at 3rd conjugation verbs, which are less overwhelming. Concedo, concedis, concedit, concedimus, conceditis, concedunt. SWAHILI: Here is a practice dialogue: A: Shikamoo mwalimu. B: Marahaba. A: Hujambo? B: Sijambo. Habari gani? A: Safi, na wewe? B: Salama tu. A: Nimekuja hapa ofisini kwa sababu sifahamu masomo yangu. Najaribu kusoma kitabu hiki lakini ni kigumu kidogo. Naomba msaada. B: Nikusaidie. Huelewi fumbo gani? A: Namba saba. B: "Kwa nini panya wa shamba anapendelea kuishi nchini?" Ulisoma hadithi taratibu? A: Ndiyo bwana. B: Haya basi, panya wa shamba alipokwenda mjini kuna usalama kule? A: La bwana. Pana mbwa watatu nyumbani. B: Na kwa hivyo... A: Panya wa shamba anataka usalama? Hutaki chakula kizuri na mahala pa kulala pazuri? B: Naam. Kama yule panya anavyosema: "Kama haya ndiyo maisha ya mjini afadhali nirudi katika shimo langu huko shambani ninapoweza kuishi kwa usalama na amani." I think it is correct...I did my best anyway! Today was a good day, but a long one, and now I'm completely exhausted. And really despise Chemistry. I squeezed in a bit of Swahili practice, but that is all. Realistically, I don't think I'll have much time for languages until the weekend, possibly even weekend after next.

After soliciting some advice and thinking hard about it, I've decided to shelve Medieval Latin in favor of Classical Latin...for now, with the goal of later returning to Medieval and figuring out the differences. The thing is, there are so many more resources available for Classical! And it seems that Classical is also the more complex of the two (according to a Latin prof at my univ). So picking up Medieval with a strong Classical base should be simpler than vice versa.
That decided, I've picked up Wheelock's Latin and have been through the pronunciation guide and the first section on verbs. I'd also like to get a copy of Lingua Latina, and I'll be listening to the Latinum podcast. On another note, I've been doing some easy Swahili review (in class). I got 100% on the first quiz! Well, given that it was on the first 4 pages of the textbook, I'm not exactly surprised...Anyway, I've really got to get back on board with working ahead in Swahili. But at least even when I'm really busy or just feeling lazy, I go to class 3 times per week and get some basic review. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Read a chapter of Harry Potter. Mostly read outloud, since I had the room to myself and it's been ages since I've actually spoken French. SWAHILI: Nothing groundbreaking, just review. FRENCH: Read some more Harry Potter.
LATIN: Read some Wheelock. Reviewed pronunciation, then went through Chapter 1 and into Chapter 2...It's going to be a real slog getting to level I want I reach by 2010... My academic life is going through some major turbulence at the moment. I expect things will settle by next weekend...and I will almost certainly have made some beneficial changes to my schedule, which will mean a) more time to work ahead in Swahili again! b) more time to read French Harry and watch French movies, and C) blaze through Wheelock's Latin at a crazy pace. My Language Hitlist has also undergone modifications...I've been thinking really really hard about what I want To Do With My Life (not too worried yet though--I'm only a teenager!!), so I've come out with some new priorities: French (imminent travel and work in France; academic necessity) Swahili (imminent travel; taking a class in it; possible work in East Africa) Latin (academic necessity) Turkish (possibly helpful for travel and career) German (academic necessity) 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Been reading and reviewing Wheelock pronunciation guide and Chapter 1. SWAHILI: Some more review and whatnot in class. Here is a made-up dialogue: A: Hamjambo? B1 & 2: Hatujambo bwana. Na wewe je? A: Sijambo. Habari? B1: Safi. Unarudi nyumbani? A: La, sirudi pale. Lazima niende maktaba. B2: Sisi tunakwenda maktaba pia. Twende pamoja! A: Haya. Kwa nini mnakwenda maktaba? B1: Mimi nahitaji kitabu cha Kifaransa. B2: Na mimi nataka vitabu vya Kiingereza. Nataka pia kusoma magazeti ya Kiswahili. A: Vizuri.
