Oh, and the other day, just for kicks I wanted to record myself reading a paragraph of Italian. I thought to myself "obviously this will sound just like rai uno". The hell it did. I was disgusted with myself. :D

So that might actually pose something of a problem. Obviously I'm not going to obsess about it now when I don't even have the fluency *to* talk, but I think I might have to do some work on pronunciation.

Great log Numerodix,

Anyway, don't worry about losing momentum, it comes and it goes. Keep up the good work.

Thom.

I feel like it's still a bit early for me to be watching movies, there are a lot of things I miss. But they do help to reinforce the spoken language, like Tom Hanks running around in Rome trying to find a map yelling "mi serve oggi però". :)

It's never too early to start watching movies. You want all the exposure you can get, even there's a lot you don't understand. Especially if there's a lot you don't understand.

Thom, thanks for the kind words!

Levi, I tend to think that there is such a thing as "the right time" with these things. Watch 50 movies when you understand very little and it will benefit less than watching 10 at a time when you're better prepared to absorb them. Don't you think? After all, we're talking about using your time as best you can, so it matters how much you can get out of it.

I've come across a variation that doesn't seem to feature much:

> Be', se non si trattava di tattica, allora l'ha fatto d'istinto. Il che è ancora più pericoloso.

I realize it's rather imperfect to be quoting sentences out of a novel, and it would be too much hassle to type up the preceding paragraph for you. Even so it might not clarify the meaning to 100%. But here the guy who is being spoken to has been very impudent in the opinion of the speaker and he's being scolded for it. My interest lies in the use of "il", which seems to be used as a pronoun instead of "lo". I've seen this once or twice before, but it seems very rare.

I don't think the loss of efficiency is nearly that high. Even if you only know basic vocabulary and basic grammar, I think you can absorb a lot from a movie. You're going to need massive amounts of audio input from somewhere in order to get accustomed to the spoken language, and movies are probably one of the best ways to get that input, given that there are so many visual clues to let you know what they're talking about, and vivid images to attach to the words and phrases you hear.

But of course it all boils down to how you learn best. If you find you learn best by building a really solid foundation and then watching movies, by all means do that.

The full stop instead of a comma is an "artistic license". It should be: "l'ha fatto d'istinto, il che è ancora più pericoloso".

The pronoun's place is not taken by "il", but by "il che", which we could literally translate into the horrible "the which": "he did it by impulse, (the) which (fact) made it even more dangerous".

Dios mio, 2000 views! There must be a lot of people clicking on this thread, probably by accident. Well, accident or not, I suppose if you do have guests, you should make an effort to entertain.

This will probably be one of those "I don't know whether to laugh or cry moments" for you. If you're unsure, I suggest going with laughter, it's healthier. In any case, here's me reading a short dialog from the textbook:

clicca qui

I tried to upload it on this site, but I kept getting an error. Here's the info I typed up anyway:

Description:
This is a dialog from the textbook "La lingua Italiana per stranieri".

My accent is influenced by any of these languages, hard to say which precisely: Polish, Norwegian, English

Transcript:
- Ieri ti ho cercato tanto; dov'eri finito?
- Sono stato tutto il giorno da Pino per aiutarlo a sistemare il nuovo appartamento e sono tornato a casa soltanto dopo cena. Ma perché mi hai cercato?
- Volevi invitarti a cena fuori insieme a Franca e Mario.
- Peccato! Ci sarei venuto volentieri. Avresti dovuto dirmelo per tempo, così non avrei preso un altro impegno.
- Immaginavo che ti saresti ricordato che ieri era il mio compleanno e che avresti almeno telefonato.
- Scusami!
- Peccato davvero! Sarebbe stata una buona occasione per rivederci.

Translation:
- Yesterday I was looking for you a long time, where did you go?
- I was at Pino's all day helping him tidy up his new apartment. I returned home only after dinner. Why were you looking for me?
- I wanted to invite you to an open air dinner with Franca and Mario.
- What a shame! I would have loved to come. You should have told me before so I wouldn't have made other plans.
- I thought you would remember that yesterday was my birthday and that you would at least have called.
- Forgive me! I'm really absent minded. I hope I didn't offend you!
- No, not at all. But I'm sorry for you, you would have had great fish and seen two old friends again.
- To make it up to you, I'm inviting you all to my place. I'll cook myself.
- I am sure that Franca and Mario would love to accept your invitation, but they can't. By tomorrow they have to be in Milano for work.
- A shame indeed! It would have been a great occasion for us to see each other again.

As you can tell I'm all over the place on the rhythm, it sounds very odd. And I screw up the reading once or twice, but then performance art was never my strong suit.
