I've finished Asfur and am still doing one lesson per day with the two Assimils. Tonight I'm going to watch a film, Adama Meshugaat, which deals with the Kibbutz movement. I've made one of my Israeli-American friends promise to call his friends in Israel and ask them to buy me books and audio books. I'm asking them to track down Kafka and Camus, two authors who I enjoy reading immensely and are mainstream enough to track down pretty easily (I'm hoping.) Hopefully they will be able to find the audiobooks...

I decided that now was a good time to begin the Michel Thomas French course. I'm taking a day off from Assimil French in order to focus on MT. I've started watching a new Israeli slow about a girl's soccer league. Hopefully I'll get MT finished today, but it's not a big deal if it takes two days.
p.s. wanderlust has captivated me again, this time with Turkish. help!

I totally dropped the ball yesterday. Instead of doing Michel Thomas, I watched a hebrew-subbed version of "Date Night". I did manage to pay attention to the subs most of the time, but it wasn't optimal for learning. The funny part is that there was a bit of Hebrew in the movie, which I wasn't expecting at all. Hebrew is everywhere!
So today I'm going to dedicate some serious time to Michel Thomas, and I'll also have to do some Assimil lessons. I'd like to spend three hours on language learning today. I have so much else to get done today, so I'll have to manage my time efficiently to accomplish this.
Also, my language hit list on this site is getting out of control :) Now I'm becoming obsessed with Persian. I'm trying to control my wanderlust by insisting that I reach basic fluency in French reading before tackling any other new languages. The idea is that I'll use the French-based Assimil courses to learn new languages. I do have Pimsleur Persian so if I decide to do a few lessons to satisfy my curiousity I'm not going to beat myself up.

I'm listening to Nadiya right now and am really enjoying her songs. I've had another Israeli visitor here for the past week, so I haven't had much time for studying. I am a couple of tracks away from finishing the great Michel Thomas French Foundation course, so I'll wrap that up tonight. Both Hebrew and French Assimil have fallen by the wayside for the past several days, so I may backtrack a few lessons with the French. The Hebrew is still too easy to make much of a difference, but I'd like to complete a full course to fill in gaps. O.K...back to studying :)

I've been doing some thinking about my language goals. I've decided that I'd like to have near-native fluency in Hebrew by the end of the year (as stated at the beginning of my log) and advanced fluency in Biblical Hebrew as well. In two years time, I'd like to reach advanced fluency in Spanish and French and basic fluency in Russian. I think that these goals are ambitious but not impossible.
I think that I can reach advanced fluency with two months of intensive Biblical Hebrew study.
I'm still trying to figure out how to reach near-native fluency in Hebrew but I'm confident that it will happen.
I'm thinking that I will focus intensively on French (as well as Modern and Biblical Hebrew) for the rest of this year and just dabble with Russian and Spanish for now when I get the urge.
Besides Hebrew, the other languages I'm studying have tons of available materials and more opportunities for enjoyable input than I could ever utilize. There is really no excuse for not being able to reach a high level in my target languages.
I decided to take some time to think about what I'm trying to achieve because I've been captivated by wanderlust lately and this is my attempt to put things into perspective.

I am frustrated because I am still not able to find interesting unabridged audiobooks and matching Hebrew texts. I've sent several Israelis on a hunt for them, but all have returned empty-handed. For now, I'm just going to focus on watching a lot of Hebrew language television and film, as well as Assimil and that Ora Band Hebrew literature book.
I can slowly see my speaking starting to improve and my passive understanding is getting even better. I'm hoping Assimil and the Ora Band book will help speed up my reading and writing. Another thing I'd like to do is to find some Hebrew language websites and forums dealing with topics I'm interested in and to start reading and writing there regularly.
I've also sent in a request to become a volunteer ESL tutor for refugees. I'm a little nervous because I've never taught anything to anybody, but I'd like to help out if I can.

Today I'd like to go through the Michel Thomas Advanced French course. An Israeli friend was able to find a site for used books, so I'm going to order some and have them shipped to my friend's parents' address in Israel. My friend is going to Israel soon and will bring the books back when he returns.
Hebrew books are much more expensive than books in English, so I was glad to find some interesting used books.
I finished the Israeli TV series about girl's soccer. I also watched Kung Fu Panda dubbed into French last night. Now I need to find a new series to try to get addicted to.

I was supposed to be going through the Michel Thomas Advanced Course, but I got bored and turned it off. Instead, I'm going to get back on track with Assimil French and Hebrew. I'm really trying to pour all of my extra energy into Hebrew and French right now and am really enjoying watching French-dubbed media. With Hebrew, I'm now going through a new series: Hakol Dvash. Shabbat Shalom.
