I'm still averaging about 2 hours per day with language-related stuff, which is less than I'd like.

Despite the great reviews on amazon, I'm finding the Penguin Russian Course less than inspiring. It looks like a good book to use as a review after I'm able to intuit case endings and grammatical rules.

When it comes down to it, I'm a person who loves great books, film, and talking to people. Any language tools that can get me to those goals without pain, I'll try.

I've decided to make this year all about achieving "basic fluency" in Russian, and getting ready to enroll in classes at a Hebrew-speaking university. I'm also focusing on Biblical Hebrew. I think that these are ambitious goals, but totally achievable.

I've been really tired the past few days, and I haven't done much language-wise. I can easily catch up and acheive my weekly goal though, so I'm going to make a fresh start tonight.

I am thrilled that there is so much Russian media on the Internet. This makes my life much easier.

Bad week for languages and a bad week overall! So all of that stuff I said I was going to do last week I will do this week. Not only have I neglected my language studies, but I temporarily abandoned my other hobbies also. So this week is all about getting back to normal.

Why did all of this happen? I've been kind of depressed about my lack of job prospects in this economy. I guess the logical thing to do would be to undertake a course of self-improvement and hone skills that would be attractive to employers. I also don't know a lot of people here so I can't really do *combinas. So I'm going to look into developing some new skills...no more of this being depressed stuff.

I've started to watch dubbed films in Russian. My strategy is to watch films that I've already seen so I don't get too confused by plots. I watched "Lost in Translation" dubbed into Russian and I must say I was annoyed at the treatment of Japanese culture in the movie. Tonight I'm going to watch Russian-dubbed "Le notti di Cabiria" again.

I'm listening to Dana Berger right now, and I'm really enjoying her music.

*I must be becoming Israeli, because when I wrote combina I assumed everyone knew what it meant.

I've watched a few Russian-dubbed films in the past couple of days. I'm not sure if this is the best use of my time, but it definitely helps to reinforce vocabulary. I basically learned how to speak and understand Hebrew by watching TV shows and movies, but only after I had a very basic understanding of grammar and a 1,500 word vocabulary.

There are a lot of unique aspects of the Russian language that will probably make it more challenging to speak than Hebrew. However, reading seems quite simple compared to Hebrew so I guess it all evens out. Actually, I get the feeling that I will learn Russian much more easily than Hebrew simply because of the wealth of materials available. In my experience, the key to language learning is enjoyable input, decent study habits, and motivation.

What I need to do is meet some Russians in my area. There are several Russian Orthodox churches here, but I don't feel so comfortable going that route. I also thought of joining a chess club, but I already have way too many hobbies: marathon training, yoga, languages, martial arts, reading, music, studying for demanding exams. oy vey iz mir un vind mir!

Another thing I'd like to do is to try L-R for both Hebrew and Russian. I know that there are some parallel texts available for Russian, but I bet I'd have to create my own for Hebrew and I wonder if it is worth the time.

I'm going to be out of work for the next couple of months. I want to use this time to make as much progress with Hebrew and Russian as possible. I do actually have to study for a difficult exam as well, but I'll figure out a way to sort it all out.

I've been pushing myself with running, trying to improve my times and distances. I'm not sure if it's exhaustion, but a few times I've found myself listening to music whilst running and simply understanding and enjoying the lyrics without having to translate from L2 to L1. I'm not going to kid myself into thinking I understand Russian--so maybe I'm just confused. I think it's been proven that there is a connection between vigorous exercise and memory, and maybe these experiences are some manifestation of that.

I'm really enjoying the Israeli TV show mesudarim...the guys on the show are really hot :) Oh and I'm falling behind on my Hebrew reader, so I'll work on that today.

I am "kicking it old school" tonight, listening to Ofrah Haza and preparing to watch "Police Academy 3: Back in Training" dubbed into Russian. Somehow watching cheezy movies makes foreign languages more accessable. And since I'm confessing my sins, I've also been listening to more than a little bit of Russian techno/pop music...It keeps me going during those 10 mile runs.

I used an SRS religiously until my old computer died. Now that I have a new computer, I'm reinstating the SRS. The plan is to add new vocabulary from "Modern Hebrew Prose and Poetry" and to sentence mine Srugim and Mesudarim.

For Russian I'm still going through Pimsleur at a snail's pace...then I'll review Michel Thomas Advanced. I'm also listening to tons of music and some podcasts to get used to the language.

My Israeli friend is in town so I've been spending most of my free time going places with him and speaking only in Hebrew. However, I kind of left Pimsleur Russian by the wayside so I'll pick up where I left off in two days.
