Thanks a lot for “Waking life”. I’ve just finished watching it with about 80-90 comprehension and really enjoyed it. Although this figure also means that I must double my Anki activity to annihilate English at long last.:))
In fact any Philosophy outside Marxist’s rubbish was strictly prohibited in the former USSR under the Communists and there were very few materials available in Russian the first years after them. Owing to the market and the Internet the situation is improving gradually and much more materials (though less than one can expect) have appeared in Russian of late and at long last you can not blame Lenin for your ignorance.
But it has turned out that Philosophy is the most illusive things in the world. Even when you learn languages you know that you are slowly but inevitably moving to your goal. However when you learn Philosophy it is not that your are not progressing at all (you can be moving quite rapidly) but the goal is running from you by leaps and bounds along with your progress. So the chances of success are very small. Success here generally means that you can build up a more or less satisfactory model of yourself and Universe   in your poor brain and act in accordance with it.
Therefore languages as a whole are a better thing to study because you can hope to enjoy the fruits of your labor in the long run. :))

Then again the point of philosophy is thinking, not the conclusions you get to (I think). Imagine if someone actually solved the question of existence. Then he/ she (might be a woman after all;) wouldn't be able to mentally masturbate about it. Dreary.

Quabazaa, thanks a ton for your film tips. I’ll check them out asap. I expect my little frog-friend Vuzu to be working relentlessly to "ship" them all.

PS.It goes without saying, that when I watch football matches I do not expect football players/interviews to increase my intellectual potential. :))

First of all, thanks Joanthemaid. You deconstructed my texts better them Derrida!

As for the films, Fight Club is a good one ( I’m watching it right now). But you should not expect from girls watching only suchlike stuff. They are more interested in relationship, intercourse, communication than in «bare» thoughts, facts or acts. That is why they will be always watching serials, soap operas, etc. with extensive «trivial dialogs».
Certainly, they can easily pretend to share your tastes, but only in case they find it interesting for themselves.

Tu quoque, dantalian!

Do I have to answer that? I think we all have a shallow side (and should in fact have one) but that doesn't preclude also being intellectual. Actually I suffered most of my life for being an 'intello' and 'living on another planet' so I find it sort of amusing how you two guys are trying to make me fit your ideal image of women.

The ideal image (if it really exists in my head) is probably something lying behind the scene of conscience and if I revealed it in some of my posts I couldn’t do anything about it.
But consciously the text you quoted simply reflected my observations that most women enjoy watching serials. Am I wrong? Sorry if I involuntary jumped to the wrong conclusions. I did not bear that in mind. Moreover, I didn’t intend to reproach women for watching soap operas at all (I specially stressed that women like watching them but not ONLY them). So, I never thought you to be dumb or shallow and tried to prove the opposite. Sorry if I failed to express my ideas more explicitly. My English definitely sucks now.

joanthemaid wrote:

I don't know her, but I doubt Quabazaa is shallow or dumb either. I didn't see her writing: "I'm spending hours every week in intellectual pursuits so I can meet more boys from abroad!". Did you?

No, I didn’t. I always meant the contrary and have not written anywhere that Quabazaa is shallow or dumb. As for your second statement she nicely put everything in her very first post of the log: « I'm Jenny, 23 from New Zealand. I'm living in Switzerland (German-speaking part) and married to a Spanish speaker.», which most likely presumes she is not interested in « meeting more boys from abroad». In my view she just socializes for the sake of socializing with people that she finds interesting. Or is it a minor prick to me? Frankly, in my latest post in this thread I meant just to thank her for the film I really enjoyed and nothing else. However, I am interested in hearing your sociological observations on «spending hours every week in intellectual pursuits for meeting boys (girls) from abroad». Could you be more specific on that issue (what is good/bad/forbidden here; territorial/ sexual/moral/other restrictions/ limitations/ etc.), since you brought up the issue?

joanthemaid wrote:

So yeah, I indulge in bar thought from time to time...

Certainly, I didn’t mean to say that you had «bar thoughts» anywhere in my posts. If it should be a hidden rebuke to my presumably alcohol addiction you really missed the mark here. I am as sober as judge and almost never indulge in drinking. Should I exclude the Russian language from my profile at all in order to prevent alcohol bashing?

Don't overestemate and underestimate Freud.Everything has its own place in the world.

Sorry, if my posts were too mundane for you. But I cannot do anything about it, and certainly, I cannot be cleverer than actually I am. I’ve never stated that I solved the question of existence (moreover, I admitted in my profile that I don’t understand some of those who have come a bit closer to that point). I don’t think that I live in a rational realm of pure thoughts and lack of emotions at all. I simply don’t belong to the happy few. But on the other hand if I don’t have the right on «mental masturbation» what should I do then? Should I download «Russian Institute» or something and start masturbating physically instead? :))

Anyway, I am grateful to you, Joanthemaid, for the «psychological profile» of my «inner being» you outlined. I’ll try to have a look at it more intently.

PS1. Philosophers can be absolutely different too, by the by. Have a look and compare their «social faces» in Plato, «Symposium» and Petronius Arbiter, «Satyricon»:))

PS2 . I can’t get why on earth should I have a heck of a lot «bad» thoughts about you after all?
