Had a job interview to be an English teacher here in Annecy. Unfortunately I won't be able to start until the end of August. What a bummer! I sent away my resume and the next day rang and arranged the interview all in French. For the interview we had to obviously speak English. It went really well. Unfortunately, as well, the job is only part-time. I have been finally getting into job hunting, I hope it's not too late. I have 6 days to find a job ! Otherwise it's bye-bye Annecy. Been going into restaurants, super markets, McDonald's etc.etc. for jobs. Haven't tried any hotels yet. Must do so tomorrow. Wish me luck.

With all the job hunting I have to at least give the impression that I speak French. It's going reasonably well, I can hide at least some of my faults. I must scream complete foreigner whenever I walk in to hand in a resume, the looks I get sometimes. A nice little trick is to use the words posed by the person, for example, "Vous pouvez travailler a partir de quand? Je peux travailler a partir de maintenant" It's really easy huh? It's also good to prepare a little vocabulary. It's not possible to just say voici C.V. With the restaurants it's pretty clear you need to speak French REALLY well, I still give it a go though.

I recently changed my status to Speaks French. I'm a little hesitant about that, I'm pretty exigent with myself. I may just change it back. However there have been a couple of native French who've told me I speak French..period, that was pretty encouraging. I however feel that I fit the wonderful description by splog/fluentczech. He made this modern youtube classic video. basically I'll never get 100% to a native French level as that will take YEARS, but I feel I've got to a point where I'm pretty satisfied.

So we're almost halfway into the challenge. I'm gonna talk about that in the next post.

Is trying to read a book that you are just really not into sapping your energy levels for everything else that is French related? I know if I try to force myself into doing something I am not really enjoying, I find it sometimes spills into other areas of my language studies?

I relegated the book to the toilet. To be honest it's getting a little better. I don't belong to the group which adores and fawns over doctors. I'm not a fan, per se of House, Grey's Anatomy, Scrubs etc. Ad inf. First and foremost it's best not to be a walking stereotype a la New York police office. I don't think it's entertaining to watch doctors standing over a patient using snappy medical jargon which we don't understand and therefore we are inferior. This book is kinda like that. It's better just to be nice!

Wow it's been a while and I still haven't a thing to say!

Right now continuing my little sejour in France. Currently in Paris. No job, school, friends. Just arrived and here I am. It's not the 1st, 2nd or even 3rd time here so I've already seen the sites. I would like to get myself established here so I can speak French everyday! Will keep you updated.

I've been reading a little, watching t.v a little. Mostly I've been communicating with the people I live with and people about. I'm reading a book by Jules Verne called Michel Strogoff. I just saw a dubbed film called Public Enemies. Definetely an improvement with my French, but as always it's slow and steady. Goal is for this year to sit the C1 exam, I still have just under 6 months, definetely doable.

I would also be interested to hear how you get round to speaking French only every day.

I don't mind starting a conversation in English if I'm at the office de tourisme. I think there are some places its best just to go with English. On the other hand if you speak better French then somebody speaks English then it's a very natural switch to French. I think thats the key, just to be able to speak very well.

As for Paris I think it is often too cosmopolitan or too globalised. I would loved to have visited Paris say 100 years ago. I imagine that Paris is very different to say when Zola, Wilde, Fitzgerald, Van Gogh trod les rues.

I put the below post elsewhere on the forum but I will put it here as well.

I had set myself these goals at the start of the challenge. It's about 7 months into the challenge.

1. In February I'm doing the B1 Delf test.
Well I sat the DELF B1 test in February

2. In April I will be spending one or two months in an intensive language school in France.
I spent two months in Annecy France in May and June. It was an invaluable experience. I was marked at a high B2 level at the end of my stay.

3. My immediate goal is to pass the B1 test in flying colours.
I did quite well in the B1 test. My goal wasn't just to pass but to pass very well. Overall averaged mark was 80/100

4. I plan to also do the B2 level and if I'm ambitious I will try to do the C1 test late in the year.
At this point I'm going to skip over doing the B2 test. I hope by the end of this year I will be able to sit the C1 test and pass. I sat a TCF practice test under formal conditions and I got a C1 level. It's very different from the DALF C1 test however.

5. At the moment my resources are at a low. So I have to get some resources ready.
I have started to use one resource which I wasn't using when I wrote this goal. I have spent at least 100 hours this year listening to podcasts put out by radio stations on Itunes. My two preferred radio stations are France inter and France culture. It has been my prinicpal form of study, alongside movies, class and just communicating. Lately I have started to read more and more.

My outlook for second half of the challenge:

I wish to continue to stay in France, work permitting. I want to fine tune some points of the language I still have a little trouble with. Above all I want to have a clear idea of my level and I will sit either the B2 or preferably the C1 test later this year.
