There's another urban legend - I do so hope it's true - that the Japanese government abandoned the Kunrei romanisation after their warship the 'Titibu Maru' docked at New York, and released hundreds of Japanese sailors into the city with the word 'Titibu' written on the forehead of their naval caps.

I've heard about German people called "Peter Silie", Petersilie means parsley, or the more unfortunate "Axel Schweiss". Pronounced the same, Achselschweiss means underarm perspiration...

I once met a gentleman in Munich named Herr Hufnagel (horseshoe nail). He owned a roofing factory, so I guess he could have changed it to "Dachnagel." I have an Icelandic friend who shortened his name, when naturalized as an American citizen. Problem is, he shortened it from "Asplundh," (he was Norwegian on the paternal grandfather side, hence the Norwegian name) very common in the states, as it's one of the largest tree-trimming companies, with orange trucks running around with "Asplundh" on the side. He shortened it to "Asp." A Norwegian friend of mine refers to him as "Mr. Snake." Then, I have an Austrian friend named "Niedersuess." To me, it just sounds like an artificial sweetener, but German friends always snicker on hearing it...

I know a lot of Thai girls have names ending with "porn". And some of them are from Bangkok.

There is a Slovak hockey player in the NHL with the name Miroslav Šatan. Of course, on his jersey the Slovak character Š is written as S. Satan.. A quote from the NHL website says 'Satan played in every game in the 2006-07 season and was one of three..' Worth a chuckle.
