I am hesitant to agree with you because a mere anecdote is far from being enough to make such a serious conclusion. The logic is rather slim. My speaking native Madarin is also far from being enough for me to make a solid argument. About the middle of 1600s, the Manchu people (who defeated Ming dynasty of Han people, took control of China, and founded Qing dynasty) started the emigration over Shanhaiguan into former Han area in a large number. I have read The Red Mansion Dreams written by a person who lived about the first half of 1700s. From the novel, one can easily perceive the conversations were tinted with Manchu spoken vocabulary and expressions. So one can not deny the oral language influence from Manchu people during its 400 years' political control. However, as some researchers have pointed out, Hanyu (contemporary spoken Chinese) had far more,ever decisive influence on Manchus rather than the other way around. Yes, it always puzzles me how some of the most basic kanji vocabulary in Japanese aren't used in Mandarin. So you do use "食" to mean "eat" in other Chinese languages? 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||||||||

Too many whys... It is normal that languages are changing, no matter you like it or not. Languages are different from mathematics and physics.
Mandarin had been in a widespread use handreds of years before the existence of KMT and CPC. Read the conversations in Red Mansion Dreams.
Quite on the contrary. I fabricated the following sentences like a pupil doing his homework. I certainly would not speak likewise to vegetable vendors, but they show the speaking style of me and many of my acquaintances. But I think there're a few ways to pronounce 摂 for someone's name.
Take http://www.ufpress.jp/member/setsumori/index.htm for example, his name is Mori Setsu. It really depends on what his parents decide to call him...
