I think you're right in assuming it's aimed for beginners (up to "advanced" beginners). There are 101 courses, 102 courses etc. Each has two-three units (and five-six lessons per unit) according to this pattern:

Seeing "conjugation" as one of the grammar topics of Mandarin, makes me wonder (since verbs aren't conjugated). I haven't yet studied any language above level 101 so I don't know how far you get in the language. But if LiveMocha and Rosetta Stone were my only alternatives, I'd choose LiveMocha since it's free. On the front page, I get this message: "Upgrade to a Plus Course Accelerate your language learning by enrolling in a Livemocha Plus Course. Learn more" The links doesn't give me much more information than that Plus starts at $9.95, and the features: Global Community Interactive Lessons Multiple Exercise Types Mobile Downloads Phrase Book and the commercial: Go beyond CD-ROMs with Chinese Plus: 4 courses packed with premium features Master fundamental skills as you advance from beginner to intermediate levels Expert Tutor Reviews Livemocha qualified tutors give instruction on your speaking and writing exercises Phrase Books Downloads Over 50 pages for you to download, print, and keep You get comments on written exercises as well as recordings without having to pay, so I'm not sure what the Plus course adds, except maybe the possibility to download content. Thanks a lot again Jeff! Your summary confirms what I had seen myself.
I tried parts of Unit 9 & 10 and did not feel that they could help me, so I don't see any point in going for paid content, and their definition of "intermediate" is very different to mine. I might just ditch LiveMocha as simply not useful for non-beginners. I really don't understand all the hype and recommendations I was given for this site! 1 person has voted this message useful | |

So, I'll have little to say about LiveMocha, but will review it among other sites as a means to find conversation parterns online and nothing more.

Oh dear, I never did get back to update this log! Silly me :)
FIRST MONTH - after the initial jump in progress, I was communicating as required, but still had a long way to go. I also had to think about my finances and career, so I focused on writing a guide about how I learn languages, which you can see on my blog. This slowed down my progress in German a lot, since I had to do this in English, but it was a necessity. SECOND MONTH - Finished writing the book and started selling it. Sales are going well so the third month has been much more focused on the actual German mission. I also have a bunch of people helping me with translations :D The entire content will be in 8 languages in a few weeks and I'm aiming to have it in 20 by the end of the summer :) THIRD MONTH - With my financial situation improved, I could focus more on German. What's unique about my own particular approach is more focus on social aspects of language learning. That wasn't going to help too much for a language exam however!! So in this third month I have been studying a lot. Doing exercises, reading books in German, writing short texts to get them corrected etc. The usual exam-study stuff. I do have my own exam hacks (not cheats) that I will be applying, and NEXT WEEK I will be sitting the C2 exam!! There's no getting out of it now! Now that I am way more familiar with the exam layout, I know how this is going to work and I know that it is VERY VERY HARD :) I will be pouring all my energy into continuing to study for the next week and pushing my potential up that extra wee bit. I don't know what my chances of passing are - good? Slim? Not likely? We'll see! This experience has been great for me - while less social than I usually prefer, I have improved my academic scope of German and can indeed read it very well and can write formal texts at a decent level. Thanks you two!! :) The support everyone has been giving me has been amazing! I'll make sure to update here after taking the test, and post the results. In one month I will start an entirely new 3-month mission. Believe it or not it's going to be even harder than this one :D :D

DONE!!!!
I have sat the C2 exam and am exhausted, but am really pleased about how it went! I wouldn't have changed anything in my study method and have no regrets. It was very hard (of course), and based on the mock exams and corrections I got for those I did slightly better, but I was just shy of a pass each time I did an example test. The aural (listening) test was the one that gave me the most trouble with some complex questions that I may not have answered satisfactorily - that may be what decides if I pass or not overall. However, I am very confident that I passed particular sections (oral, writing etc.) I get results on July 12th and will post them on the blog. I'll also write a post detailing my experience in all 3 European Certificate exams (so far) and advice for others considering to do them too, most likely next week. Oh yes, and I start a whole new (and much harder believe it or not!) mission just after I get the results of this exam. For the next weeks I plan on enjoying Berlin way more, socialising, and further improving on my spoken level of German. It's good to have this monstrous task finally behind me!! Even if I didn't pass overall, I'm very pleased with the achievement and have learned quite a lot - not just in terms of German technical information, but in general I have improved my study approach that will definitely help me in future language missions! To celebrate my achievement and progress, German is now part of the "speaks" list on HTLAL :) I will no longer be "studying" it, just speaking it ;) But a new language will be added to "studying" very soon :D :D Edited by irishpolyglot on 25 June 2010 at 7:15pm 1 person has voted this message useful |
