In Serbia, English is compulsory for generations now. It starts in kindergarten and continuous through the all process of education (e.t. elementary school, high school
and University). As a second language 1/3 of schools offers French, one 1/3 German and
one 1/3 Russian. But Russian in the last time seems to be less popular so many schools
who offered it before now teach Spanish or Italian. In high schools, beside compulsory
English and the second language, offer and Latin (which is also compulsory). Plus, if
you live in a multi-ethnic community you have to learn and language/s of local
minority/ies (e.t. Hungarian, Slovak, Romanian etc.). And of course, Serbian, as
official language is also compulsory.
I started with my English in kindergarten and learnt it for 16 years. Due my changing
of elementary schools I studied all 3 secondary languages (e.t. Russian, German and
French). In high school, I took French as a second language (and on my Uni also) and
got Latin. Serbian is my mother tongue and was language of my education.

It's obligatory here to learn English. I've learned it for 7 years but the new generations will learn it for 11 or 12. As second language I choose french but I could also choose Spanish or German (although my school didn't offer it)

I studied French for four years and Spanish for three years in high school. I had to argue a bit with my guidance counselor to get to take them both. He told me, "Those are two languages." It was all I could do not to say something unforgivably disrespectful.
My school also offered German, Italian and Latin; they dropped Russian just before I got there. The school had 1600 or so students in four grades and is now closed.
When I was in college, I majored in French. The college had a good reputation for languages and offered French, Spanish, German, Italian, Russian, Mandarin Chinese, Latin and ancient Greek.
As far as I know, languages aren't usually required in the United States and comparatively few students take them. Most students who do take a language don't take a full four years. Spanish is the most popular language, with French and German in second and third place. More schools are offering Mandarin Chinese, but it's still rare in this part of the country.
