People are always saying how good it is to watch movies and tv in a foreign language and accordingly I've been trying to watch Холостяк. Usually what I hear is something like this: Цдсичж цфг word жджфб. Phrase. Вдвйножфс word лкбфе, нгппол еуЮгЭьжж. When I hear a word it's either:

A) a word that's easy or that I've been exposed to so many times that I know it, or
B) a word I almost know.

Most of the time when I hear the almost-know words I think "Hey, I almost know that word! Hooray!" and then things keep going. This can happen with tv, music, or a real conversation (sadly meaning both I and the other person think that we're having a real conversation when it's actually an almost-conversation.) I never realized what a bad habit this was until I tried being patient enough to listen to the same thing twice {gasp}. And lo and behold, the second time I understood significantly more of the exact same phrase, and so on with multiple viewings. I never realized how much a simple repetition can do for you and how harmful it can be to just go on, thinking that you almost know the word. Close only counts in horse shoes and hand grenades!

For the last 20 minutes of the episode I took notes on phrases that I almost understood and then researched until I actually understood. I also wrote down some things that caught my attention for one reason or another. I plan to rewatch this same episode again, listening for the things I already caught and trying to go a level deeper and hear new things.

(bold = the new and the almost stuff)

Я не перестал = I have not stopped
У меня оечнь много ухажеров = I have a lot of followers
на верблюде = on a camel
на лошадах я не сидел никогда = I never rode horses
на самом деле = in fact
расслабся = relax!
я не смогла расслабиться = I couldn't relax
все прошло хорошо = everything went okay
я сразу говорю = I'm saying right now
надо мне стрычь = ?
для меня это был просто шок = for me it was just a shock
я шла как на плаху = I was going as if to the guillotine
она без колгот = she doesn't have any tights
отработала она хорошо = ? (need context)
мне за это роз не нужна = I don't need a rose for that
нам на ужен принисли поднос = At dinner they brought us a tray
подобная = ?
это редкость = That is a rarity
я подумал = I thought, vs я думал = I was thinking
колпак и фартук = cap and apron
это по секрету = it's a secret
до сих пор = (up) until now
нахочеться чтобы половина о чем это все = ?
у нас такой очень глубокий разговор = we are having such a deep conversation
каждым словом, дествем, поступком = in each?every? word, act, procedure

JMT,

3 things:

1. I love reading your updates.

2. I've started watching Top Model and I will be taking notes and rewatching as you mentioned you're doing. I've been waiting for motivation of some sort and I feel that trashy television will do the trick.

3. I'm interested in the context of the camel reference above. I just learned (yesterday!) Я не верблюд!, meaning "I'm not a crook" or "I'm not in the wrong/doing bad things!" The contextual meaning was specifically "I'm not cheating on you, I'm not that kind
of person!" Anyway, I learned that meaning before I knew that it meant camel.

отработала она хорошо = she has carried out something well.

отрабатывать - отрабатывать, - отработать
1) (возмещать работой) clear by working, work off
2) (работать какой-то срок) work (for) отработать пять дней — work for five days
3) (совершенствовать) work through; perfect; fine-tune
4) (тренировать) work out, train, practice
5) (избивать) give the works / business

Я не верблюд!
Actually it means 'I don't want to take such a heavy load' as a negative respond to asking for performing some work.

might be стричь which means to cut one's hair / to shear

Quote:

подобная

and that will, probably, be 'similar'

I don't really speak russian so you may want for a reply of a native speaker/someone who does. It's just that the words are pretty similar to ours so I thought I'd give it a go.

Доказывать, что я не верблюд means there are difficulties in proving someone's innocence in a crime. For example you have done an action or was in a wrong place that may be regarded as a prove of your violence of law and you will have really hard time to show your innocence, доказать, что Вы не верблюд. No верблюд does not mean a crook. Maybe here you will find a help: http://otvet.mail.ru/question/11780052

Clang: thanks for the note and good luck to you with Top Model! I'd never heard that верблюд phrase either, but it's very interesting. Have you ever heard a similar saying- я не бигимот? I heard it once but I didn't understand what they meant by hippo- is in like in English, I'm not a pig/gluttonous? The context of "на верблюде" was a man explaining that while he'd never ridden a horse, he did ride a camel when he was young. It's really difficult for me to memorize the rules for endings, so instead I like to memorize phrases like that one. On a camel = е at the end of the masc noun. Btw, have you heard that old joke: От куда? От верблюда!

Kraft: appreciate all the info and translation help! I'll listen again to the scene with "отработала она хорошо" now that you've clarified it :)

Tozick: I think you're exactly right! It was a scene where someone was getting a haircut. Thanks for the correction!

I'm not sure I understand. Доказать, что я не верблюд literally means "to prove I'm not a camel" and means
figuratively that I need to prove that I am not guilty of something. Maybe? Hah.

It reminds me of a sort of cultural trope in the US that once you have to prove you are not crazy, you've already
lost.
