I went to the zoo last week with a goal: learn one new word, something that would surprise me enough to stick around in the memory bank. Found it: занесен в красную книгу, or listed as endangered. Занесен is not a very memorable word, but how can you forget in the red book?
Also, as part of my efforts to make work more worthwhile, I've started doing two new activities with my classes. One is a vocab game. The class gets to look at their vocab lists and quiz me: How do you say "detective" in Russian? This way, haha, they're practicing their English too without even realizing it. Then they close their books and I get to quiz them: How do you say "плоскогубцы"? There's not always time to do this activity and I tend to get soundly beaten because of not actually studying the list before class, but at least it makes me more aware of new words. The other idea I tried out recently during midterms. Since the students get an oral midterm- stand up, answer a question, get rated- I've started doing the same thing at the end of class, except that after reading the question in English I answer it in Russian. Answering in Russian was pretty embarrassing but, uh, that is probably a good thing. Anyways, I've never been able to remember, is it -лась or -ься for a girl? After a dozen students warning be careful teacher, you talk like a man, I realized that лась sounds like lass. Problem solved! One student seems to have made it his mission to better my Russian. He forwards lots of links to Soviet cartoons, like Hedgehog in the Mist (scariest cartoon ever, that owl is terrifying and I'm almost 30!!) and как львенок и черепаха пели песню. He also harps on pronunciation. Most of this doesn't stick to my Teflon tongue but one thing shocked enough to stick: ться is pronounced ца. The last update? Made a little bit of progress on the холостяк assignment, just haven't had time to type it up yet. Coming soon, I hope! :) 1 person has voted this message useful | |

лся can be pronounced as лса, but сь with hard с is outdated. You can hear it in speech
of some actors or old singers but it is not used now (at least in Moscow) and is not considered standart. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Today, just for kicks, I went to watch another teacher's class. Being Ukrainian, he taught in English and Russian and I heard a couple new words.
храбрый = bold/brave у меня жар = I have a fever пирс = pier контрабандист = smuggler приманка = bait Also, the students' corrections from my "midterm": Mistake: I said "на Аляски". Correction: на Аляске. Mistake: чтобы я буду получить диплом. Correction: чтобы (мне) получить диплом. Mistake: я решила много вещи. Correction: я принела много решений. Mistake: около пьять месец. Mistake: I said "на Аляски". Correction: на Аляске.

I put in some work on холостяк.... it takes a long time because I have to pause and re-listen multiple times but it'll probably get easier eventually. Here's what I picked up this session: Я какая-то искуственая = I am artificial (fake) Ты играешь на камеру = You put on a show (play) for the camera Замолчю = I'll be quiet Все внутри мне сказало, что... = Everything inside told me that... Список приглашёных у меня в кармане = I have a list of the invited in my pocket Кто-то хочет прочесть? = Does someone want to read (it)? Пригласили спецального гостья = They invited a special guest Это один из лучших... = One of the best... Вам будет тяжёло сегодня работать = You (all) will work hard today Я просто боюсь что, я не фотогеничная = I'm just afraid that I'm not photogenic Меня очень удивил выборь девушек = The choice of girls surprised me Когда я зашёл в комнату где... = When I entered the room where... На секундочку я почувствовал что... = For a second I felt that... Я не буду вас отвлекать = I don't want to distract you (all) Когда мужчина влюбляется он уже не замечает...= When a man falls in love he already doesn't notice...
