I'm updating again! This is the second time I've posted on my own without having to be convinced or reminded! I
know that's really pathetic, but it's actually pretty exciting for me. Even more exciting is the fact that I'm
continuing to make project and be excited and motivated. As depressing as it is to admit, by this point I've
usually lost interest and motivation and given up. For the time being, though, I'm still interested, motivated, and
excited. In fact, I think it's making me in a better mood. I feel like I am actually doing something worthwhile with
my time, and I've found that I enjoy doing it. Hopefully this will last.
Now that I'm finished rambling, here is what I've done in my language studies since the last time I posted:
Dutch
Unfortunately, I still have not done very much with Dutch. I think the fact that I don't have an actual hard copy of
a Dutch book, despite the fact that I have several on the computer, has caused me to put off studying it. So, my
goals for this weekend are to send all the books that I have on my computer to my Kindle and to put the audio
that I have on my iPod. This way, I can't use the excuse of not wanting to do it off the computer, and I will also
be able to work on it when I have free time at school, on the bus, or other places. I would also like to start a new
Anki deck, because I got annoyed with the one I had and deleted it today.
Italian
I've been studying the vocabulary on Anki, but I haven't actually done any lessons or grammar or anything. I
seem to have misplaced my Italian book, which made doing lessons a little difficult... Yesterday, a friend lent me
two books (Easy Italian Reader and Ultimate Italian), though, so I hope to start actually studying this weekend. I've
also been looking for a good Italian book for the Kindle, because I've found with French that that works very well
for me. I've had trouble finding one, though, so for now I will stick to the two I'm borrowing.
French
I saved this for last because it's the only one I've actually put significant work into. My friend and I finally went
and talked to the teacher who wanted to start a study group for students considering taking the AP exam
yesterday, and she lent us the books that the AP class is using (AP French: Preparing for the Language
Examination and Une Fois Pour Toutes). I worked on a couple lessons of Une Fois Pour Toutes during my off
period today and have been continuing to work on Complete French Grammar. I also added a bunch of
vocabulary from AP French into Anki and have been continuing to work on that. Also, this morning I told my
mom we needed to start speaking in French, so we didn't speak English all morning. I'm hoping we will keep
speaking French as much as possible, because it's very good practice.

All right, it was originally suggested to me by my friend (Ellasevia) that I choose one day a week to update this.
That was my original plan, because I thought that I wouldn't be motivated enough to post more than that.
However, that changed, and I found myself actually updating more than once a week. After taking a look at his
log, though, I've found that I really like that setup. So, I've decided that, as today marks one week from when I
really started studying, I will try to update on Sunday nights. I might still post during the week if I see a reason
to, but Sunday will be the day when I update and share the progress I've made over the week.
Also, I started an Excel spreadsheet that keeps track of the time I've spent studying each language. It's sort of my
own version of the one that Ellasevia sent me, because that one for some reason won't work on my computer, so
I just made my own. Surprisingly, I've actually studied a lot more since creating it (yesterday), simply because I
enjoy watching the graphs change when I add in more study time. I guess I'm easily amused. So... Here is my
overall progress for the week.
French
- I started looking through the books from my French teacher from last year and doing a few
lessons. - I played FreeRice with French vocabulary. This isn't a huge amount of practice, but it's fun, and 10
grains of rice are donated to prevent world hunger for every answer I get correct. - I practiced speaking
French with my mom. - I did a couple of lessons in Complete French Grammar.
The total time I've spent this week, this month, and this year on French is 3.1 hours. This constitutes 43% of my
studying so far.
Italian
- I did the online Rosetta Stone demo for Italian. It wasn't extremely helpful, but it came up during a
google search, and I decided to give it a try. - I looked through a bit of Ultimate Italian.
- I did FreeRice
with Italian vocabulary.
The total time I've spent this week, this month, and this year on Italian is 2.1 hours. This constitutes 29% of my
studying so far.
Dutch
- I listened to the first CD of Michel Thomas Dutch and added the vocabulary into Anki.
- I did some
of Teach Yourself Dutch. - I downloaded and practiced some BYKI Dutch lists.
- I listened to some of the
Assimil audio while reading the dialogues.
The total time I've spent this week, this month, and this year on Dutch is 2 hours. This constitutes 28% of my
studying.
Also, I've decided that I think I am probably going to keep studying Dutch after the end of this month. I originally
was just going to do it during January for the Dutch challenge, but I got a late start, and I'm enjoying learning it,
so, as long as everything continues to go as smoothly as it has been, I will keep studying it, potentially all year.

I would normally wait until this evening to write this so that I could include today's study time; however, I've
already done all my Anki for today, and I don't foresee much time for more studying the rest of the day. I still
have one final college application to do today, and I also have a fair amount of homework. I did, however, get my
first college acceptance letter on Friday to a college with an amazing study abroad program, so I'm very excited
about that! Unfortunately that's about the only good thing I can say about this past week. I've had a lot of family
stuff going on, which has resulted in very few accomplishments when it comes to languages. I only did about 4
hours of studying. I did do my Anki reviews every day, though, and I did do some other studying when I had the
time, so I'm still doing better than I have during my past language learning attempts.
FRENCH
- Anki
- Free Rice
- Reading practice on www.tf1.fr
My total study time for this week was 2.45 hours. My total study time for this month (and year) is now 5.53
hours. My goals for this coming week are to try and practice speaking with my mom as much as possible and to
actually get around to doing some of the stuff my teacher from last year gave me. Perhaps next week I will
attempt to write something in French on here. It makes me really nervous though, so I don't know...
ITALIAN
My total study time for Italian this week was 1.25 hours. My total study time for this month (and year) is now 3.3
hours. I really didn't do much for Italian this week. I hope to start doing some actual lessons this coming week,
though. Of course, this depends on how much school work I have and how much family stuff is going on... We'll
see.
DUTCH
My extremely unimpressive total study time for Dutch this week is .37 hours. My total study time for this month
(and year) is now 2.37 hours. This is pretty disappointing, considering I'm supposedly participating in this
January Dutch challenge. I'm not TOO concerned, though, because I am going to continue studying Dutch after
the challenge is over, and I will hopefully have a lot more time and a lot less stress in the coming months. My
main goal for this week is to finish the next CD of Michel Thomas Dutch.

I am once again writing this post a bit earlier than planned, because I have already done my Anki reviews for the
day but still need to do all of my homework for tomorrow, so I probably won't have time to do a lot more work
on languages today. This week was slightly more productive than last week, with 4.45 hours of study compared
to last week's 4.1. This is still not nearly as much time as I should be spending, but I did actually attempt to
break last week's habit of only doing Anki reviews and no other studying for most of the week. I must admit that
for Italian, I was completely unsuccessful and only did Anki and nothing else. One or two days I didn't even do
Anki. For French and Dutch, however, I had a bit more success. I was actually doing pretty well until Friday. I
finally finished my last college application and had a pretty good week until a bunch of stuff sort of went crazy
on Friday. I am hoping to get back on track starting tomorrow, though.
FRENCH
- Anki
- www.tf1.fr
- We watched a French movie in my video and film class this week, so I tried
to look at the subtitles as little as possible to practice listening. - I translated an article from www.tf1.fr from
French into English.
My total study time for French this week was 3.15 hours. My total study time for this month is 2.98 hours. My
total study time for this year is 8.68 hours. My goal for this coming week is to actually start doing some of the
stuff my French teacher from last year gave me to work on and, if possible, to start speaking French with my
mom on a regular basis. I would also like to start getting a significant amount of my news from French websites
like TF1. I'm a bit of a CNN addict, so English will have to suffice for at least some of it.
ITALIAN
My total study time for Italian this week was .38 hours. My total study time this month is also .33 hours. My total
study time this year is 3.72 hours. This was a very disappointing week for Italian. For next week, my goal (like
last week) is to start actually doing some lessons.
DUTCH
- Anki
- Michel Thomas CD 2, tracks 1-5
My total study time for Dutch this week was .91 hours. My total study time for Dutch this month is .88 hours. My
total study time for Dutch this year is 3.28 hours. While I did not meet my goal of finishing the second CD of
Michel Thomas Dutch this week, I did at least do some of it, which I'm happy about. My goal for this coming week
is to finish that CD and do at least part (hopefully all) of the next.

Hello!
This has actually been quite a productive week for me, which is interesting considering the amount of anxiety I've
been having. I didn't have a lot of homework, though, so that helped a lot. I did a little over seven total hours of
studying. I still haven't managed to get very involved in Italian, but I did make a lot of progress in French and a
decent amount in Dutch.
FRENCH
- Anki
- Speaking practice with my mom
- Listening practice with a French news
podcast - Listened to two different recordings of Cendrillon
- Watched the Disney movie of Cendrillon
for listening practice - Watched part of Alice Aux Pays de Merveilles for listening practice
My total study time this week was 5.57 hours. My total study time this month is 8.55 hours. My total study time
this year is 14.25 hours. My goal for this week, again, is to start actually using the materials my French teacher
from last year gave me.
ITALIAN
The total study time this week was .6 hours. The total study time this month is .93 hours. The total study time
this year is 4.3 hours. My goal, once again, for the coming week, is to start actually doing some Italian and not
just doing Anki reviews.
DUTCH
- Anki
- Finished the second CD of Michel Thomas Dutch
My total study time this week was .95 hours. My total study time this month is 1.83 hours. My total study time
this year is 4.23 hours. I finally managed to get around to finishing that second CD, which I'm happy about. My
goal for next week is to finish the next one.

Okay, so it's been a really long time since I've posted. I'm really sorry about that. My life has been pretty much
insane the past few weeks, and I've fallen way behind. I don't have a lot to report, but as it's been so long I
thought I would update anyways. I haven't really done any Dutch or Italian, besides Anki reviews. In fact, I've sort
of stopped my Italian reviews for the moment, as well. For some reason, no matter how many times I start
studying Italian, I never follow through, even though I really like the language. I'm thinking I'll try to pick it up
again when things calm down. Right now, as I am finishing my last couple months of high school, is just not a
great time. I am continuing to do my Dutch and French reviews, though.
For French I have also been reading Harry Potter 4. I am actually really enjoying this and am pleasantly surprised
by how much I understand. It always excites and encourages me when I am able to get through several
sentences in a row with complete comprehension of both the vocabulary and the grammar.
I haven't been recording the time I've spent on languages at all. I sort of got bored of it and lost interest. Maybe
I'll try starting that again next week. I don't know.
Next week is spring break, and I was originally planning on trying to get caught up with language studies then,
but I found out today that I am leaving tomorrow to go visit colleges. I'm actually extremely excited about this,
but it will cut out a lot of the time I could have been using for languages. I will attempt to take some materials
with me and study in the car, but I don't know how much time I'll actually end up spending on it. We'll see,
though.
I think that's everything I needed to update on. I will try really hard to get back into the habit of posting each
week.

I can't keep accurate account of the hours studied-- I'm one of those people that could really get into it, too. I'd have pie charts and line graphs going, so it's probably a good thing that I don't have time to do it. Does it benefit your studies to keep track of the hours?
