Further info on the word log in the Sony Reader 650. My log has reached 100 entries and that seems to be the limit. It appears to keep the 100 most-recent dictionary look-ups. And despite trying everything, I cannot find any way to save that log. It probably is related to the licensing of the dictionaries. However, when you look up a word, you can mark it. That adds it to a list. You can highlight and mark words, or segments of sentences or pages. Those marked items go into a list that you can download to your computer. That is quite useful.

To me 100 entries in a dictionary log is still a useful feature, althoug it is good to know there is a limit. And a downloadable text clippings file is something I've also been dreaming about! I would like to be able to read texts in German, French, Italian, and Spanish with the respective dictionaries providing instant look-ups. In the future, I want to be able to add more languages. Which e-reader is the best choice for this?

Sony Reader 650 has French, German, Spanish, Dutch and Italian translation dictionaries. So far, I have been using only the Dutch <> English one. It is excellent. The dictionary interface is excellent and immediate. I am very happy with the 650. I doubt if additional dictionaries would ever be available to add to the 650. Thanks for the information. Dutch is an interesting choice. Why not Portuguese or some Scandinavian language? I wonder if it will be possible to add more languages to the much advertised Kindle 3. To me, having a reader without the necessary dictionaries wouldn't make sense at all. 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

I agree. It was a wonderful surprise to me since Dutch is my main target language. The choice probably is related to the arrangements that can be made with the various dictionary owners. The Dutch <> English dictionary is from Van Dale, the major Dutch dictionary company, and it is excellent. 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

I realize that this thread is a tad old, so I was wondering if there have been any
improvements to the foreign language selection for the Kindle? For the longest time I was dead-set against using an e-reader and enjoy my collection of books, but I move way too much and my library is always growing; essentially, I'm just getting sick of lugging them across the country and over seas! Furthermore, a friend of mine showed me his and I've been hooked. I've resolved myself to finish my last book binge before buying (almost there) and looking for some feedback. I've always been forced to pick up foreign language books from amazon.de, .fr etc or when in country and would like quicker satisfaction. I'm also curious to see if anyone has had any experience with the Nook from Barnes and Noble. It's priced the same as the kindle, but I haven't found as many foreign language books and searching for them on their site isn't nearly as convenient as Amazon's. From what I've been able to gather after searching on Amazon's site is that they also have many free books for download in multiple languages, the only problem is there aren't too many I actually want to read. Although I've been known to read books I normally wouldn't in other languages just to learn the language, my willpower only extends so far. I'm far more likely to pick up a technical book/paper on engine combustion, mathematical modelling and theory and the like versus any type of classic literature. If anyone knows a bit about what kinds of topics in are supported in other languages and could offer a recommendation, that would be wonderful. 1 person has voted this message useful |
