I don't know anything about this book, but it was just released and so far has gotten good reviews
on Amazon:
Arabic for Life: A Textbook for
Beginning Arabic

You can see a full table of contents and a pretty extensive (62 pages) sample of Arabic for Life here:
http://yalepress.yale.edu/yupbooks/book.asp?isbn=97803001413 13

I'm also very interested in any feedback on this book, or on Wightwick & Gafar's Mastering Arabic.

The local university uses Mastering Arabic Volume 1 for Arabic 101 & 102, and Volume 2 for 201 & 202.

I wrote a short review of it on the first page of this thread

Assimil Arabic with Ease (English Version) is not at all bad as a beginner's method. The
2005 French version, "L'Arabe sans Peine" however, is indeed superior. If you don't
understand French the English version is nevertheless a decent alternative.

I don't know anyone who has learned it themselves, but it should not be harder than any other language. Self
discipline is the answer :) This is a good place to start www.arabiconline.eu. It is a free online course in Modern
Standard Arabic for complete beginners and it has voice recording facilities so you can practice pronunciation and
compare it with examples. Good luck!

One thing i definitely took from language learning -.... you have to live, breathe, and LOVE the language.   In fact, i pulled this quote in this forum, "if you're dreaming about the language in your sleep - you are studying in adequate amount" - That is my motivation.

If you don't like it - you're not going to want to spend HOURS upon HOURS learning it.

That's why I stopped on Arabic. I don't know if I will ever even visit a country the speaks that language... It just seemed cool to learn.

Good for you! Keep it up! Plus there are Arabic speakers all over the world - you don't have to visit an Arabic
speaking country to speak it!

Hey,

Firstly, thanks for all the useful pieces of advice in this discussion.

I am at an intermediate Arabic user, almost fluent, but rusty. I studied at uni ten years ago and have been going back now and then, as well as lived in the Middle East.

I am looking for
1) some course material (selfstudy) on a higher level
2) some fun online vocabulary games, for free or cheap, that one can download to Iphone/Android or computer. Something like Brainscape http://www.brain-scape.com has for French.

Thanks in advance.

Best regards,
Eva

I hope to find out shortly, as I will be using Ultimate Arabic plus some other materials, including a book from the DLI.

I can't yet speak to the other materials mentioned here, but I've heard very good things about the Hans Wehr dictionary.

I'd like to ask about Arabic for Life: A Textbook for Beginning Arabic. I know it was asked in a 2012 post but was wondering if anyone had the opportunity to use it since then....
