Note to readers: I'm in Brittany for three weeks. I will be continuing to post my log of daily language study/practice here, but for more conversational reflections on my linguistic (and non-linguistic) experiences in this lovely part of France, please see my new log: Degemer mat en Bretagne!

(That means "welcome to Brittany," half in Breton and half in French!)

Milestone: I've decided to move French up to Basic Fluency.

Frankly, I could have done it quite a while ago, but I tend to underestimate my abilities in a language until I've had the "in-country" experience to test myself. In France, I'm finding that everyone speaks far more comprehensibly than I had expected, and that I am able to carry my end of the conversation quite well and make myself understood easily.

I'm also not having much trouble with understanding what others say, as long as the conversation stays away from technical details. For example, I got a little lost when, while buying a SIM card for my phone, the woman in the post office started telling me about how I would start with a five-euro credit and then receive an additional ten-euro credit once I had registered my phone with France Télécom. I eventually figured it out once I opened the packet and saw that there was a form included, but at the time I found it difficult to understand what she was saying. The fact that she spoke very rapidly didn't help – I think she was a little nervous trying to make herself understood to foreigners. But besides that, everything's been going very well.

Besides my own comfort with the language in this new situation, the other factor which made me decide to list it as "Basic Fluency" is the fact that I've gotten three completely out-of-the-blue compliments on my French in as many days. I hear that the Bretons are typically more generous with their compliments than the Parisians, but still I'm surprised and gratified to get this positive feedback in person.

I just realized I'm posting this update on Bastille Day – how appropriate!

Congratulations on reaching basic fluency in French! And what better time or place to have reached that milestone than on Bastille Day in France? Great work and I hope you enjoy the rest of your stay in Bretagne. :)

@ellasevia: Thank you! I'll admit I was very pessimistic about my linguistic abilities going into this trip. But I guess being a pessimist has one good point: it means you're always getting pleasantly surprised. :)

Hi everyone! I can't believe how long it's been since I've updated here. As always, I've been keeping track of my studies in my offline document, but I keep forgetting to upload my entries to my log. I promise I'll get back to posting soon.

Brief update: I got back from vacation in France, spent a couple weeks at home in the US, and then moved to Germany. I've been accepted to a master's program in translation here at the University of Leipzig, and so it looks like this will be my home for the foreseeable future! Those of you who know how much I love Germany and the German language will understand how excited I am about this.

At this moment, I'm in a bookstore here in Leipzig, at an event designed to advertise a "brand new" method of language learning, called the "Birkenbihl Methode". I have to confess, I'm pretty disappointed by it. It's a complex computer software program which basically is an exact copy of L-R. But of course, people generally vastly prefer fancy software to a simple parallel text and audiobook. :)

I promise I will answer all PMs and start posting again ASAP! I'm still settling into life here, but am finally beginning to catch up on my online life as well. Bis bald!

Wow Jinx, that sounds like barrels of fun! I am glad you seem to be enjoying Leipzig; I
will drop you a line if I am there in the future; how long are you staying there? I'm
really thrilled for you - I can sort of imagine the thrill of being there, as I would
have the same sort of feeling if I were there in your place!

Schön, dich wieder online zu sehen. Lass was hören und bis bald!

Jack
