What a coincidence, I've recently seen several advertisements for Catalan classes at our university. They were held last year and the idea must have been quite successful, considering they are offering them again. Of course I thought about going but sadly I really don't have time for this. I'll rather bring my Spanish to higher level. But when I was in Barcelona last year, it was really fun to try and decipher the written Catalan quite everywhere. Have fun. And write something for me to decipher :-)

I meant to say this earlier, but forgot about it: I have decided to stop logging class time (I have about 15 hours of German-language classes per week) and conversation with friends as "study" of German. I know this makes my log a bit lop-sided, because at first I WAS logging those activities. But, frankly, it would just be too much to try to keep track of all that stuff. On average I get in 1-2 hours of conversation and 2-3 hours of class (plus probably an hour of reading random stuff that I forget to log) per day. You can imagine that as being added to my total or not, depending on your own study standards. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Milestone: my first text in Catalan! It's pretty basic, but I like it. I haven't gotten it corrected yet, so it may have some mistakes. The assignment was to write a paragraph about our town and family. I'll add a translation below, so for anyone who wants to try to figure it out on their own: don't peek further down the page until you want to check your answers. :) I doubt you'll have much trouble, though – Catalan is a fun and easy language!
Here's my text. --- Català: Ara fa dos mesos que jo visc a Leipzig, però jo sóc d'un poble molt petit als Estats Units. Allà, jo visc a prop de Boston, al nord-est del país. M'agrada molt viure a Leipzig, perquè m'agrada Alemanya. M'agraden molt també les llengües. Però Alemanya és molt lluny dels Estats Units i Trobo a faltar la meva família. Hi ha quatre persones en la meva família: el meu pare, la meva mare, la meva Germana, i jo. Enyoro la meva Germana molt, perquè és la meva millora amica. Però no enyoro molt el meu poble, perquè és més aviat avorrit. És tan petit que tenim només una botiga. Crec que Leipzig és una ciutat molt maca! --- English: I've been living in Leipzig for two months now, but I come from a very small town in the United States. There, I live near Boston, in the north-east of the country. I really like living in Leipzig, because I like Germany. I also really like languages. But Germany is very far from the US and I miss my family. There are four people in my family: my father, my mother, my sister and me. I miss my sister a lot, because she's my best friend. But I don't miss my town that much, because it's rather boring. It's so small that we only have one shop. Looks like you are experiencing nice progress. Thanks for "the riddle" I guessed right quite everything but some parts made me think a bit harder. It is however not that difficult to guess from pieces, context and overall structure as it is would be impossible for me to decipher some of the words alone. But it must be much harder to write it as it could easily mix woth two languages. Congratulations to your first text! And I'm looking forward to decyphering another some time in future.
