@tomsawyer & Kuikentje: Sehr schön, euch beide kennenzulernen! Ich freue mich auf unsere gemeinsame Deutschübung. :)
@Jack: Skype address received, thanks. Now I just need to go re-download the program and hopefully this time it'll work. :)

Well, that's torn it. I've just gone and started Dutch. The pull of the tempting January Challenge was just too much, and I grabbed my old "Colloquial" book off the shelf and started reading it. We'll see how this develops.

Hi Jinx,
I've enjoyed reading your log from last year and wish you luck on this year's multiple challenges! When you get the
chance, tell us about your plans for Mandarin. Like you don't already have enough on your plate!

Hi Jinx,
Best of luck on the TAC and language learning in general!
If you, (or Jack) make it to Munich, send me a message and perhaps we can get together for a Team çü coffee.

All right, I guess it's time to post some goals. As I'm sure everyone knows by now, my target languages for 2011 continue to be German and French, in that order. Other languages I'm working on (on-and-off, I should say) are Dutch, Italian, Mandarin, Esperanto, and toki pona. Let's take a quick overview.
GERMAN
My favorite language, major in university, and the only language besides English that I dare to say I "speak" without too much equivocating and explaining. (I have very high standards for myself.) Right now I would guess I'm about a low C1 in German, but I would like to really solidify my C1 level in 2011. If I do end up in Germany by the end of the year (which I'm hoping will happen!), I would love to actually officially take the C1 test. But, failing that, I'll just continue self-assessing my level.
FRENCH
I would say I'm currently about a B1 in French. I'd like to reach B2 by the end of the year. I need the most improvement in listening, second-most in speaking. I'll probably get plenty of both during the three weeks I'll be in Brittany in July.
DUTCH
Yes, I admit it, I'm doing the JDC (January Dutch Challenge). I just couldn't resist. The language is turning out to be awfully fun so far. I have no particular goals in Dutch (I don't need it in my life – all my Dutch friends speak English). I just plan to study it as much as I can for the month of January and see where I am at the end. It's mostly just a test of myself, to see how quickly I can progress in a language which is already familiar thanks to other languages I know (German, English).
ITALIAN
I must confess, Italian's been more off than on recently, but I'm not planning on 100% stopping with it any time soon. I've got enough Italian under my belt by this point that I think it would make more sense to continue with it up to a solid B2 level before I take on either Spanish or Portuguese. My passive knowledge of Italian is waaay ahead of my active knowledge – I'd say I'm about an A1 active, B1 passive.
MANDARIN
I adore Mandarin, but haven't been giving it the time it deserves recently, with the end of the semester and Christmas both hitting me one after the other. I hope to return to it in 2011, but unfortunately it will have to remain a project I do in v-e-r-y s-l-o-w m-o-t-i-o-n, due to the precedence which German and French take. Returning to my Anki flash cards of the hanzi yesterday, I found that I hadn't forgotten as many characters as I'd expected, which is promising.
ESPERANTO
Esperanto's just a casual on-the-side thing for me. That said, I actually haven't been doing it even on the side for a while now. Yesterday I finally went through all my Anki cards for the first time in over a month, and luckily I hadn't forgotten much, but I certainly hadn't progressed any. My eventual goal is to finish the entire TY Esperanto book, once I have a little more room on my linguistic plate.
TOKI PONA
I keep vaguely returning to toki pona. I think it's a fascinating idea and would love to get good enough at it that I can feel its usage affecting my linguistic thinking. However, I just haven't found myself studying it recently. I consider it more of a linguistic game than a language per se (hope I don't offend anyone by saying that). I'm very fond of it, and may eventually return to it. But I'm not making any commitments right now.

I was really tempted to join the Dutch 6WC, because Amsterdam will be the starting point
of my trip to Germany in March.
Unfortunately this time of the year is really crazy at my company, leaving me little time
to study, and I was also afraid that studying Dutch now would get in the way of my (very
little) German.
Anyway, good luck on your Dutch. Please, keep us posted on your progress.

Hi Jinx,
I enjoyed reading your goals for this year, and seeing your first entries. Considering how advanced you are with German, I'm looking forward to seeing your rapid progress with Dutch. Are you finding the similarities in Dutch with German and your mother tongue, that people always claim to exist?
Thanks,
Rob.
