Hi Jinx,

Wow, I didn't realise you'd given yourself so much to do!! Also I've only just realised that German is your major at uni, so being a German fanatic (and there's not really any exaggeration there at all) I'm pretty happy to read that. Glad to hear you've got my Skype address and I look forward to chatting with you there sometime.

There is a fairly strong possibility I'll be in Munich sometime this year, zenmonkey, so when I have that arranged I'll let you know! I've missed Munich, I used to go there quite often a couple of years ago but alas, the frequent trips have stopped.

To Jinx, good luck once again, see you around :]

Salut Jinx!!!

on peut écrire en français??? comme je ne suis pas sûr de la réponse, je vais quand même continuer en anglais !! :))

ok... it seems that you are very dedicated to your dutch study right now.... so... first of all, I find it amazing you dedicate yourself so much to this language!!! now, since you've already done so much in dutch (how many hours so far??), what kind of goals did you achieve? do you think you could write some sentences in dutch on this log?? how about your achievements regarding the oral part of the language??

by the way, good luck... (as for me, I really feel I need to find a better way to learn dutch... I really dont try to carve "it" into my (to little?) brain... just like portuguese !)

Any tips with the oral part???

(Sorry for my bad French – I would greatly appreciate any corrections!)

DUTCH UPDATE

Now I've been studying Dutch just over two weeks (sixteen days, to be exact) and getting in at least a little study almost every day. I think it's about time for some impressions and self-evaluation, don't you?

It's very difficult to find a free online evaluation test for Dutch which gives you CEF ratings with your results. The only one I've taken (just now) was this one, and I got a result of 32/50 questions right. That puts me in "false beginner's level" which feels about right.

What do I think of Dutch so far? I really like it. I started off with no feelings for it whatsoever, but the more I study it the more I like it. (Funny; the same thing happened with Mandarin.) I find reading Dutch quite easy, due to my knowledge of German. The listening is a bit harder due to the many unfamiliar sounds, especially the diphthongs like "ij" and "ui," but I'm listening to lots of Dutch and Belgian music to help accustom myself to the sound of it.

I'm just over one third of the way through the six-week challenge, so I'm going to mostly wait on output for now.

As for the future, I like Dutch enough that I would love to return to it in the future, but that might not be for half a year or so – a semester of German study followed by a short trip to France are going to keep German and French taking up most of my plate for the present time. However, I'm going to stick to Dutch throughout the 6WC. I've done about 20 hours so far, and my goal is to hit 60 (averaging out to 10 hrs/week of study) by the end of the challenge.

I like your detailed entries about how you're spending your time and exactly how many minutes you're spending on
each language. It paints a picture of how one can study several languages at once, something that's still a bit of a
mystery to me. I admire your hard work and progress--keep it up!

Ack, I keep track of my studies very carefully in a document on my computer, but I keep forgetting to post my entries to this log! Well, here are the latest updates. By the way, I'm a few days past the 4-week mark now, and I just re-took the test I linked to above. This time I got 35/50 right, which puts me into the "niveau pré-intermédiaire" (I accidentally took the test using the French version of the site instead of the English version this time).

In my personal life, I've had a rough couple of weeks – I've lost a couple of dear ones to cancer in the past months, and am generally dealing with a lot of stress. For a while I was falling behind on my Dutch studies due to this, but now I'm catching up again. We'll see how things progress.
