Wanderlust confessional

My feet have hardly had a chance to touch the ground recently due to other commitments. So definitely no time for casual wandering...

Teango's word of the week

チンピラ (pronounced "chinpira": bad boy, junior yakuza). I picked this one up from Khatz's ever-refreshing mountain stream of tweets. Now hand over all your kanji, gaijin, or the logbook gets it! ^o^

Notes

It's been a very tough week all round, both work-wise and domestically, thankfully made a touch lighter by occasional visits to Лунтик и его друзья. :) I've happily managed to collect some more fresh tunes along the way (something long overdue), and my listening skills in Russian seem a bit sharper on the whole.

[edit: I've amended my reading level to 80%, having retested myself over a larger body of text for more accurate results, and having a native speaker there to double-check.]

In all honesty, I feel quite ashamed for not having reached a higher level yet in Russian. Although it's a challenging language in its own right, my main problem is finding enough time to fit my studies in consistently. Every now and again I find the hours and make some progress, but then leave it without proper review for far too long and let it all slide back down a grade again. It's like a perpetual game of snakes and ladders with this one...but I hope to change all this very soon. ;)

Just as a little experiment, I tried listening actively to a film in Cantonese ("Yip Man chinchyun"), noting down words or phrases that stood out or were repeated a lot, and then trying to match up the English subtitles. In the first hour I picked up about 25 common words and learnt how to pronounce and hear certain sounds that are not in the English phonemic library much better.

Teango's word of the week

вампир (vampire). I always like words that have hidden meanings in another language, like this one when separated for instance, where вам пир ironically means "a feast for you". @vv@

Notes

I've started a new project called "Trans-Siberian Express" in the hope of getting me out of my intermediate sand bunker and back onto the green to success. You'll find all the details in the introduction for the log itself, but in a nutshell, I'll be putting a lot more hours into listening and reading in Russian from now on. So far I've completed "Маленький принц" (The Little Prince), and am now delving into the familiar territory of "Гарри Поттер и философский камень" (Happy Potter and the Philosopher's Stone).

In addition to reviewing the Hebrew alphabet, I watched several foreign films recently. These include "Delicatessen" in French, "Seres queridos" (Only Human) in Spanish, and "Carlston za Ognjenku" in Serbian (English title: Tears for Sale). I'm also interested in signing up for BSL (British Sign Language) classes with my girlfriend and am currently trying to get in touch with a local tutor.

Teango's word of the week

People may laugh at my fondness for watching Russian children's programmes like "Luntik", but it's already starting to pay off. I've learned several new words which have popped up time and time again whilst listening and reading. Therefore today's word is "табурет" (stool), which I learnt in episode 70, and has for example already appeared in Ollivander's wand shop and as a support for the sorting hat in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. Long live Luntik! ;)

UPDATE, WEEKS 26-30 (2011)

Unfortunately, I've been ill over the last month, so July's been a bit of a washout. I'm hoping to get back on-board soon...

Very sorry to hear you have been ill - just remember that your determination to learn and enjoy life is much stronger than any illness and you will make a fine comeback before long!

I've been there myself, as you know, and have a few health issues trying really, really hard to creep up behind me, catch me and then beat me into a multilingual pulp right now, too!
