Great post Renee! I wish we had language festivals down here in Australia (do we? anyone?!). Would be such a lovely
occasion it would. Why is Australia so isolated!!! Stom land... No, I don't mean that, it's not a bad place.. nice
wildlife, outdoors and beaches.. and we do have quite a mix of backgrounds, foreign travellers, exhange students,
especially here in Melbourne... but in the way of languages and the abundance of cultures which you experience in
Europe, we're unfortunately no comparison.

So thank you for sharing your experiences in your most elloquently-flowing-descriptive English, and allowing me to
somewhat feel the pleasure of being surrounded by language enthusiasts and the sounds of different tongues.
Blessings

Thank you, Vos. I assumed there must be some kind of language event taking place anywhere in Australia but I can't really find anything on google. There's going to be an Esperanto conference in Adelaide in July but it seems it's only about Esperanto and no other languages.

I'm increasingly appreciating the amount of languages and cultures I have within my reach from where I live but up till now I've not made nearly enough use of it. I’ve never even been to Scandinavia, the Iberian Peninsula or Eastern Europe! A friend of mine is going to travel all over the continent by train this summer and I’m just dying to join her but I’m already going to France and I’ve promised another friend that we’re going to Ireland together. And of course money is a concern. My efforts to make a money-tree sprout up in my backyard have yet to be rewarded with success.

Speaking of travelling, weren’t you planning to travel to South America or Europe round about this time of year? Maybe I missed something but what happened to that plan?

About ten minutes ago I signed up for a four-week summer programme in Annecy, France. My final choice was between Annecy and Chambéry and I chose the first for the purely sentimental reason that I spent my very first summer holiday as a ten-month-old tot crawling around on the beach of Lake Annecy. It’s a silly reason but I had to cut the knot someway and I had ran out of reasonable arguments so I went with sentiment. I will be there between July 9th and August 5th (which means I’ll be there for Bastille Day!) and I’ll stay with a host family and attend 20 lessons a week.

I am supper excited and super scared simultaneously. As we all know, the reason why this fine competition we compete in is called The Total Annihilation Challenge is because the idea is that we violently mow down any and all obstacles that hamper us on our way to language mastery. When I think about what holds me back in my languages learning, apart from trifling matters like needing sleep and nourishment, I keep getting back to my extreme shyness. I have found ways to use being a perfectionist and a control-freak to my advantage but that darn fear that keeps me from opening my mouth in public, it simply will not do any longer! I know that if I don’t do anything about it now I’ll keep telling myself that I’m not ready to practice speaking yet, that I’m still working on my passive skills, that I’ll talk to that native speaker next time, etc, and I’ll never be fluent.
So, in the spirit of total and ruthless annihilation, this month in France will be an attempt to violently hurl myself into the deep end of the pool and hopefully find myself staying afloat.

I am not nearly as confident as this previous paragraph may lead you to believe. In fact, I’m half-hoping they have to reject my application because the programme is full or a meteor has hit Annecy. Either will do.

Yes I immediately went to google after your conference write-up also and unfortunately found nothing. ¡Qué
lástima! Yes my plans tend to come out of nowhere and either eventuate, or vanish into the ether once more.

So I was thinking for a short time about going to back to South America in August last year, but I was accepted
into the degree which I wanted to do, so decided to start straight away instead of put it off for another 6 months.
Then basically throughout past January I was thinking of going in July this year for around 7 months or so. But
I've just found a really nice place with some most lovely people, and I'm really enjoying being down here and
having a home which I can make my own, and can't really see that changing. And if I was to go away, then I'd
have to move out, drive all my things half way across the country, and then when I would return in February next
year, have roughly 3 weeks to find a place again. And considering I've been through the process of trying to find
a share house many times now throughout the past 2 years, I can safely say that I'm quite over it. And I know
that finding a place like the one which I have now, with such quality people, fair rent and great location, is a very
rare thing. So I don't particularly want to give that up. So it looks as though the plan will be now simply to go
away over the Australian summer, for 2 to 3 months, either to Spain or Argentina (Perhaps a bit of Poland and
Nederland if I come to Europe). Although if for some reason a really good volunteer program pops up in July or
August in South America which is in the field which I'd like to get some experience in, then I may consider it. But
I see that being an unlikely occurence. But if there's anything which I've learnt over the past years, it's that things,
thoughts, feelings and wishes change, and can change quite rapidly. So nothing is ever certain.

Februarathon goals:

Goal 1: CelC = 74% (Grrr…one percent short)
Goal 2: FiA = 58% (No comment)

Awesome! This is going to be so unbelievably beneficial for your French and speaking confidence (I think we are
both quite similar in the shyness/perfectionist department, so I understand your pain of not readily being able to
speak). How exciting! Not to mention how much fun it will be... Lovely news!

Thanks guys, you've made me even more excited about this than I already was! I'm also really excited for you Vos, about your Spanish room mate! On top of that I found out today that one of my friends is going to Melbourne on an exchange programme next year so I've already warned her that I'm going to be visiting for at least a month, I finally found a secondhand copy of Pratique du Français, my annotated copy of Pride and Prejudice arrived today and I've had way too much iced cappuccino so I'm literally bouncing around my room making high-pitched noises right now. I'm so excited! :D

I'm sorry. This didn't turn out very well, especially since that really was a fine platypus, and you're doing quite well. I will get you a real platypus at some point. Finish strong, despite it!

That's fantastic about your future stay in France! I can't help but be vicariously excited. Though you should be careful about half hopes of a meteor strike; wouldn't want one to show up while you're there and ruin your good time.

Thank you so much, he's gorgeous! I especially like the evil look in his eyes. I think I'll have him printed on something that I can take with me to France as a totem against laziness and meteors. But first he has to have a fitting name. Any suggestions?
