For some reason, I think his name should begin with an H. Wasn't sure why at first, but it may be to irritate (French) people who can't do Hs very well. Herb, perhaps? It sounds non-threatening enough to keep around, but still like someone you wouldn't want to mess with. And it may be anecdotal, but I've never been lazy nor struck by a meteor in the presence of a Herb. For your consideration. I think I’ll have it printed on something small enough to fit into my bag so the size shouldn’t be a problem. If you could send me the best version you have that would be fine.
Maybe you subconsciously realised that I’m a synaesthete who’s very particular about finding matching names for whatever she gives a name. ;) It just so happens that H is a brown and fuzzy letter for me so your instincts were right on the money. I like Herb and I’ve been thinking about Brutus myself so I think I’ll combine them into something like Brutus Herbertus the Horrible, also known as Herb the Brute or Brutal Herb. What do you think?

Week 8: February 21 / February 27
French Week 8 (25): 17 h. 40 min. 2011: 137 h. 50 min. Februarathon goals: February = 96% Goal 1: CelC = 100% (Yay!) Goal 2: FiA = 65% (I have another day left though…) I think I’ll have to give up on my second Februarathon goal because I have another 18 episodes to watch and a bucketload of homework that should really take precedence right now. There’s been a slight change of plans regarding Annecy. My contact person called me a couple of days ago because she’d received an email from the institute in Annecy asking if I wouldn’t like to start a week earlier on July 4th because that’s when the new programme begins. Apparently, if I start on the 11th there would likely be some repetition of the same material. As it happens, it was my original plan to start on the 4th but I pushed it back a week because my brother will be graduating high school in July (that is if he passes his exams, fingers crossed) and I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to attend his graduation ceremony if I chose to begin on the 4th. However, apparently the ceremony will be on the 1st which should leave me enough time to get to France in time. So that means no full programmes or meteors, but a week less time to prepare instead. Yikes. [FR] Cette semaine j’ai enfin fini de lire Charlie et la chocolaterie et puisque le mois février prends fin, il est temps pour une nouvelle modification de mon horaire français. Participer au Februarathon m’a plu mais c’était bien trop de travail à combiner avec mes études à la fac donc pour mars je compte me relâcher un peu. J’ai commandé Assimil – La pratique du français ainsi que Le Petit Prince (parce que je crois qu’il faut que chaque étudiant en français l’ait lu). Je vais aussi lire le premier livre d’Harry Potter et j’ai hâte d’apprendre les mots utiles comme « muggle » et « Quidditch ». Je ne comprends pas encore exactement comment marche la méthode de L-R mais je veux la découvrir et l’essayer. J’ai aussi trouvé quelques correspondants francophones et une fille française qui habite à Amsterdam et qui veut bien m’aider à commencer à parler. Je suis plutôt nerveuse parce que je parle encore le français comme une vache espagnole mais je ne peux pas arriver à Annecy en balbutiant et bégayant. Ça serait beaucoup trop gênant donc il faut que je pratique. Comme toujours, des corrections seraient appréciées. Miscellaneous I’ve been thinking a lot about my target languages and how intensively I plan to study them and the thing is, since I’m going to France this summer, I really just want to put everything else aside for the moment and try to cram in as much French as possible before I leave. I also seem to have a severe case of linguistic tunnel vision; I find it very hard to focus on several target languages at the same time. I am tempted by other languages from time to time but as soon as I try to incorporate them into my schedule, I get very uncomfortable about the idea of compromising my progress in French. I’m amazed at how strong my motivation to learn French still is after so many months (I normally don’t stick with a single hobby this long; I’m kind of fickle) so I plan to make optimal use of it. So for the time being, at least until after I get back from France, I am making French my sole target language again and I am creating a special category of miscellaneous languages that I will dabble in on the side from time to time. For now this category will include; Arabic: I feel incredibly guilty about downgrading Arabic so I will try to keep at it in some way but don’t be surprised if I keep putting it off indefinitely in favour of French or some other language. Greek: Kind of a happy accident, which I will be dabbling in until the end of the semester at least. I’ve decided I want to try the 10000 sentences method so I’ll try making a couple of small sentences every week and going over them with my “tutor” before entering them into Anki. Esperanto: I simply cannot resist it. I plan to start building a vocabulary base in Anki and maybe do a lesson on lernu.net every now and then. I will probably add German after I get back from France in August. I originally meant to include Papiamentu as well but it occurred to me that since it is largely based on Portuguese and Spanish, there might be some unwelcome interference if I study it at the same time as Esperanto. I may decide to start studying it quite seriously later this year though, because there’s a chance I might be spending Christmas and New Year’s on Curaçao. I'm exactly the same. Trying to study Dutch and Spanish at the same time last year was a complete failure, I just felt the whole time that one language was taking away momentum and progress in the other, so I eventually had to drop one. The annoying thing is that I really want to start Polish and German a.s.a.p. But I'm just not sure if the same thing is going to happen again, and that I'm going to feel that they're simply taking time and progress away from my Spanish. Much respect for people who are able to study more than one language at the same time and make consistent continual progress in all. I think I'm going to have to make a very rigid plan which I'm going to have to stick to if I wish to incorporate Polish and/or German with the hope of any long-term success. I start the new year of uni today so at the end of the week I will see what the work load is like and then consider a possible plan for adding new languages to the daily makeup. You have made the right choice. I wish you all the very best in Annecy. I went summer last year for a month and I ended up staying two, I think that happens to a lot of people. There is so much to see and do, Geneva is not far, Mont Blanc or Lyon. Not to mention Annecy which is fabulous in it's own right. I'll be following 100% your adventures there. Bon... pas beaucoup d'erreurs!! Pour ta correspondante française, cela m'intéresserait de savoir quelle méthode vous allez utiliser!! Je me souviens - il y a longtemps !!!- j'avais rencontré un réfugié ukrainien à Paris et nous avons commencé un échange français/russe !! Le problème était qu'il parlait parfaitement français !! Il était en France depuis 1 an, et lorsque tu es immigré, tu as intérêt à apprendre la langue du pays très vite si tu ne veux pas te "noyer"!! Pour lui c'était une question de survie... Du coup l'échange était bancal !!! Il parlait presque toujours français et très peu russe, étant donné que mon russe était (est???:)) au stade "embryonnaire"... Je pense que les deux partenaires doivent être à peu près du même niveau sinon la situation est faussée et il y en a toujours un des deux qui domine "linguistiquement" l'autre!! 2 persons have voted this message useful | |||||||||

Warning: Being a movie buff, I just could not allow myself to be asleep while the Oscars were going on so as a result I am currently functioning on more litres of coffee and less hours of sleep than I care to mention. With that in mind, I hope you’ll forgive me for any silly mistakes in this post.
As much as I admire people who manage to study several languages at once, I don’t think this is such a bad “limitation” to have. At least we’re sure to stay focused and not leave the job unfinished. :) That said, I hope you can make adding Polish and German work. German vocabulary at least should be easy to acquire with your knowledge of Dutch. Half the time you just need to take out a vowel and add some accents en klaar is kees! ;-) @ Adrean: Thank you. I’ve been reading your log from last year and I’m in complete awe of your hard work and the high goals you set for yourself! It was also very helpful to read about your experiences in Annecy AND thanks to you I’ve got lots of new French film titles to watch once I reach basic fluency. So if you’re wondering where all those new votes came from; that was me finding your log very very useful. :) @ polyglossia: Thank you very much for your corrections. That wasn’t as bad as I had feared. I’m glad the Spanish cow expression sounded alright because ever since I learnt it I’ve been itching to use it. It’s so funny and random!
À vrai dire, je ne sais pas comment ça va marcher. Elle apprend le néerlandais mais elle ne le parle pas encore très bien (je devine qu’elle est au niveau A1) donc j’espère que le français deviendra la langue véhiculaire de nos conversations. Your naming is most acceptable, and multiple variations to choose from should provide some useful flexibility. May he always be there to give you the death stares you need. Congratulations on your Februarathon achievements; given you considered your goals overly ambitious at the outset, I believe you handled them adequately. I also like that you had percentages available, a technique I may have to use, as an enjoyer of numbers of somewhat questionable value. And I will be sure to add "detecting letter/animal correspondences of Dutch synaesthetes" to my list of powers. 1 person has voted this message useful |
