I cannot imagine the pain at the loss you are experiencing. The tragedies that have befallen both your country and yourself are truly heart wrenching, and I would just like to extend my sincere condolences. I know that despite all of the sadness and grief you must be experiencing, you will carry on like the strong, brave woman you are. Love and blessings from America <3. @Meramerina and Ruskivietr: Thank you for your support. I feel like someone hit me over the head with a log, and all my movements are in slow motion, but I hope it will feel better after the funeral tomorrow. I am a bit worried though, because traditionally the priest goes through the resume of the life of the deceased, and then a family member holds a short speech about personal memories of that person. I had said I could do that, but then the priest wanted me to do the whole thing. In addition my sister and I decided that since my mother had no funeral, we will include details of her life as well, and adding up the whole speech takes 20 minutes. Since I am the sort of person who sobs wildly at any funeral, even if I do not know the person who has passed away, I am dreading standing up for 20 minutes talking about my own parents, who passed away within 6 months of eachother. However I had rather extraordinary parents, so I am counting on drawing strength from them. If my mother had the strength to support her parents and herself financially from the age of 16 to 21, and my father survived 18 months in a German concentration camp, I must be able to get through those 20 minutes to honour them.
Anyhow, today is the first day of the 6 week challenge, and I have entered with Russian. Given that my study records have been between bad and non existing lately, it can only be better, but I am setting very moderate goals for myself. If I can manage an average of 30 minutes a day I will have reached my goal. This morning I did 40 minutes of Anki, so today's goal is already met. I will also have a Spanish girl living with us for the next month, so although I have promised her mother to speak English with her as much as possible, there will still be some Spanish training in there. Also a big welcome to my new team mates on team Ohana: Ellasevia, Elan, ReneeMona and Joanthemaid. Nogoodnik and I are looking forward to be part of a larger team, as our other three team mates seem to have deserted us. @Teango and Elan - Thank you so much for your kind thoughts. By some miracle I managed to stand straight and keep my voice steady all through 20 minutes of retelling my parents' life, and I didn't break down until the last two sentences. At that point however, I just started sobbing wildly. I must have done something right though, because friends of mine and my sister who didn't know my father, but had turned up just to support us, came over to say that he sounded like someone they would have liked to know, and that they now felt they knew him a little even if they had never met him. A friend of mine said it was the most beautiful funeral she had ever been to, and since she works in the church, and has seen hundreds, that meant a lot to me.
So now I just need to try to get back to some sort of normality, and again, my Russian studies come to my rescue. I have been really good revising Anki lately. Today I will go to my father's house, where there is no internet connection, but I have brought a Russian/French bilingual book, and hope I will get some time to do something. I have finally managed to catch up with all my Anki decks. Even the ones in Swahili and Turkish. I was however quite angry at myself for letting some of them slip - one of my Russian ones I had not looked at for 4 months, and predictably, I had forgotte a lot of the words.
I have however done a little Russian every day, as well as a lot of Spanish conversation, so that is good. Tomorrow I go on a cruise with all my family (16 persons) which starts in Sweden, and has stop overs in Tallin and St. Petersburg. I really look forward to see if I manage to speak any Russian - I have not used it since Easter. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Hope you have a wonderful cruise with all the family and enjoy your stay in St Petersburg. :) I've wanted to visit the Baltics for years now, but something always manages to get in the way at the last minute, so I'll be all ears when you get back to hear how it went.
