I liked your "surprise Russian party idea". The main thing is not to let the language go, but keep working at
it whenever you feel like it.

I bet my spoken Russian will still be bad, but they seem to wholeheartedly believe that even learning to understand Russian out of country is impossible.

Yeah, that's nonsense ;)

Not that it's easy to get to the point where you can talk to native casually. But a) something like 90% (whatever that means... recognizably non-native, weird accent, but advanced speaker, I guess) is enough to have rich and meaningful conversation with natives without them being frustrated and avoiding you, and you can get there by diligent study and listening and reading _out_ of the country. At least that's my experience. And b) I think that if you have native boyfriend, you may eventually get over that last hump too.

Thanks for the encouragement, guys. It is really nice to have people stop by :)

So basically I've been taking Cristina's advice and just doing something in Russian each day. I will be participating in the upcoming six week challenge over on twitter, which was a huge motivator in the past. To prepare, I am gathering as many resources as possible: TV, film, music, kids stories and the like. I'm looking forward to digging in when this challenge begins :)
