I downloaded a keyboard and all is well in Yiddish land again. I still haven't received my hard copy of "Le Nouveau Russe" so I've decided to just start working with the copy I've downloaded. I've worked through the first two lessons. My plan for Russian is to study my Assimil thoroughly and then move on to parallel texts with audio to fill in the gaps, as well as continuing to listen to a lot of Russian music and watch tons of Russian TV.
I don't encounter a lot of Russians here like I did when I lived in New York, as we seem to run in different circles here. Many of the Russians here seem to be Christians rather than Jews, and they have several churches in the area. I'd like to stop by one for a service to see what it's like, but I'm kind of nervous. I'll go on one of those days I'm feeling rather brazen.

I'm up to lesson 5 of Assimil Russian. I've been rather undisciplined lately, but have still been studying all of my languages each day. Tomorrow my schedule should allow more time for studying, and I'll come up with an appropriate plan to reach my goals.

Good! Undisciplined has been my middle name lately, I am happy to see I am not the only one. :-)

Christina- What can you do? It happens. I've regrouped though and am ready to finish February strong!

My Assimil Russian book finally came and it turns out that I ordered "Le Russe" instead of "Le Nouveau Russe sans peine," which is the text I have the audio for and have started working through. I'm now trying to find the audio for "Le Russe," but am having a difficult time finding a torrent. I guess we are not supposed to talk about that here, so shhhh!

My Israeli friend has finally left and now I have some free time to work on my other languages. I'm going to try to finally finish Michel Thomas Advanced French tonight or maybe review the MT Advanced Russian course. If I use all of my free time wisely and maybe go to sleep a bit later, I have a good three hours tonight to work.

I watched "Black Swan" last night in French, which was fun. I really enjoyed the film.

yay yay yay! Yesterday I went out with some friends because today is my birthday and I met a nice Russian guy. He is willing to speak Russian with me in exchange for help with his English. He also understands Yiddish so I got the opportunity to speak that language also. I must admit that Hebrew interfered a bit too much because I was speaking that language all night and it was difficult to switch back and forth. When I get better at Russian I'm hoping I'll overcome that problem.

The Russian guy and I are meeting tonight again so I'm going to dedicate all day to Russian input. What an awesome birthday present!!!!

The Russian guy (Alex, but I decided to call him Sasha) have hit it off so well that he is taking me to Napa Valley next week. I think that we have actually started dating, which among other things will be great for my language studies. He seems to really enjoy speaking Russian with me and speaks way above my level a lot. He says that when he begins speaking Russian, it is difficult to switch back to English sometimes. I told him not to worry, and to keep speaking Russian even if I don't understand %100.

I've noticed several cultural differences already despite him living in America for 15 years, but all of the differences have been positive. I made him promise to take me hunting for mushrooms, which is something every Russian I've ever met seems to enjoy doing. He is also extremely chivalrous, which is something I'm not really used to. Anyway this is a journal about my language studies and not my dating life, but I thought I would explain why I'm extremely motivated to work on my Russian now.

O.K. I'm going to return to my Assimil Russian now

Assimil "Le Nouveau Russe Sans Peine" is kind of hard. I've been on lesson 8 for like two days. On the other hand, "Le Russe" looks significantly easier. A better action plan would probably be to go through "Le Russe" first and then "Le Nouveau Russe." I still can't seem to locate the audio for "Le Russe" and I would just buy it, but my cat is sick and I spent all of my money on his emergency vet bills and am living on coffee and pasta for the time being. One of my friends on this forum sent me a link to a torrent, but noone is seeding so downloading doesn't seem like an option. I think that I'll just keep going forward with "Le Nouveau Russe" for the time being and hope that it will start to make sense at some point.

I've been watching a lot of Russian TV and Israeli TV. I'm also reading a French book now. Things are going pretty well but I sure wish that Russian would start making sense to me!!

I was able to download the audio for "Le Russe" so I'm going to drop "Le Nouveau Russe" for now and start "Le Russe" today. I've been watching copious amounts of Russian and Israeli television and Russian is starting to make more sense. I must confess a bit of wanderlust, as I spent a couple of hours reading about the Tatar language. I think I may study it and/or Turkish next year, but for now, my hands are full.

It didn't work out with that Russian guy I was talking about, but strangely enough I've met another Russian guy, Yuri, who I like even more. I don't know how all of these Russians suddenly came out of the woodwork, but I'm quite happy about it.

My plan is to return to Assimil and make it a daily habit again. I'm also thinking of reviewing Using French. I certainly plan on watching as much TV as possible.
