Szia everybody. Very sorry I haven't been keeping you all abreast of my progress.

I just got back from a Wandernwochenende with my German club. Viel Spass und viele Schnee. We watched The Kebab Konnection. Pretty funny actually. So German has lately been taking up most of my time. I plan to change to a German major (from music), and maybe then go to graduate school for linguistics.

But anyway, to the main language of this thread. Hungarian. Since my last post I've only gone up to the third review chapter of Assimil (21). This section (lessons 15-20) seemed to emphasize directions, locations, post positions in general. Also beginning to touch on the future tense I think. I've kind of thrown Anki by the wayside and decided to take on Assimil the recommended way. With flashcards I get too worried about what the most efficient and effective things are to put on the cards and whatnot, so I'm going to trust Assimil's own method for the time being. I'm beginning to get used to the spelling system which is helping my retention, but my listening comprehension is lagging so I'll try to listen to the lessons more.

I'm getting to the point where I'm going to go ahead and start participating in the Hungarian Thread and begin activating the easier stuff.

I'm ashamed to say Czech has fallen by the wayside. I reviewed Chapter 2 of Teach Yourself Czech today, but I think I'll have to hold off until I get to a higher point in Hungarian. But of course I will let you know if the mood strikes me again.

Szia,

Stephen

Örülök, hogy még itt vagy és még tanulsz magyarul. Én is nem tudok sokat magyarul, kezdtem a magyar nyelvvel januárban.

Magyar thread nagyon jó, mert Maxval sok nekünk segít.

Minden jót.

Well, well, well...the prodigigal son retoins...(sorry, Simpsons reference)

Szervusztok, mindenki!

I wish I could say I was off doing something cool or productive, off in Eastern Europe hiking the Carpathian Mountains or something, but no...apparently my laziness knows no bounds, not even being held accountable to my teammates. I'm very very sorry for being a dead-weight, I guess I somehow burned out there for awhile. But I'm back in any case.

I've spent the last couple of days reviewing Assimil and I'm back up to where I left off there, so I can pretty much continue on as if nothing happened. Good news is I still have time to finish it before the year is up, and get started on Harry Potter és a bölcsek köve (is anyone aware of an audiobook for this so I can L-R it properly?) I'm in the process of making a parallel text for it right now, which is interesting because I'm about to return to Colorado State University to finish my computer science degree, and this is definitely a computer-heavy task. Maybe one day I'll write a program to automate the whole process and I can share it with you guys.

So, in summary: Sorry for abandoning Team Ő, and I hope you guys will have me back.

Szia István !

No worries about your Magyar studies, it's a good thing you returned! Take it easy, a step after step will do it.

I'm having a wonderfull time here in Budapest, having completed my intensiv course and assessed my Hungarian level. I had my certificate in A2, can understand directions, explanations, order things... well A2 level. I feel like I can go on the B1 level, but one thing is that this certificate put me back on earth :). There is a lot to do, a lot of hours of studying to reach the B1 level... But I know that if I force myself to do it, like saying "today I will study 3 hours straight" it won't go. I have to have pleasure, saying "oh, I will listening a bit Hungarian, or reading a book". And I can look back to where I standed two years ago : I knew nothing :D.

And, I know a website where there are thousand of books L-R listed. Unfortunately, I haven't the link now, I will give it to you later.

Szia !

Hi The Stephen
I think we've all suffered from the laziness you described at some point so no worries and welcome back!

What do you mean?

I'm looking forward to seeing the link.

Good luck with your continued studies, by the way!

Thank you guys for the welcome back.

I don't necessarily plan on posting every single day but I just wanted to provide an update on my parallel text project. Last night I finally found a fix for the problem that's been hindering me these last few days and was able to finish up my English-German version of the first Harry Potter. I got it all prettied-up and am now giving it a read-through to catch the bizarre typographical errors the original pdfs had.

I also worked a little on my English-Hungarian one, but this one is going a lot slower because my aligning software couldn't get the two texts to match up very well. I'm only about halfway through the first chapter, and have to use an English-Hungarian dictionary for most of the words, but I think I'm learning a fair amount. I think that will be another goal for me this year: finish my Harry Potter parallel text, THEN L-R it of course.

I would like to thank member doviende for the tutorial on his blog as well as Farkas Andras (also a member, and a Hungarian, no less) for writing LF Align, an excellent alignment program for just this type of thing.

Anyway, I also did a little with Assimil Hungarian. I have a lot of vocabulary (especially furniture) and postpositions to learn! It's hard not to jump ahead, but I'm really trying to do this program "as prescribed" so as not to burn out...

Szia,

Az István
