I've gotten the first Übungseinheit back from my tutor -- with corrections. The mistakes for the whole thing (about 350 words):

Ausdruck: 7
Grammatik: 10
Zeichensetzung: 4
Rechtschreibung: 1

I only spent about 40 minutes on the outline, so the mistakes are justified. I don't know how much I'm supposed to check spelling and grammar since I won't have the chance to do that during the real exam..

I was asked to write another introduction (the first time I just did an outline with one sentence as a main argument). Here's the new intro. Not sure if it's too long, but I'll find out:

so we'll see how that flies..

like I said, my writing needs an overhaul. I think before going much farther I'll do some more of those grammar excercises.

Before that..I wrote another outline for the second ÜE. This time I spent about 70 minutes, which is pushing it for an outline. (The total time for the Aufsatz is 120 minutes)

Neuer Aufsatz. Neues Thema. *ich freue mich schon auf Sonntag*

ha-ha. It looks like the new theme is "I'm looking forward to Sunday". That could be interesting, too -- but no. The theme is actually "Thema B" from ÜE 1: "divorce". I've already written the Aufsatz and sent it off to München, my tutor.

I'm now listening to France Info en direct.. and looking over Unit/Übungseinheit 4. I have to wait to see what my tutor says about unit 3 before I begin 4. I think I'll work on some grammar.

I'm still waiting to get corrections back from München. My tutor is pretty fast. I wrote about a 600-word Aufsatz but he'll have it back to me by the end of the day. I'm really interested in his comments. It's really important to have one or two arguments/Erörterung and then a convincing conclusion at the end. I'm hoping I can do this at the early stage. That will make my work easier this coming summer. if I can nail a good Aufsatz early on then I have more time for French :)

While I'm waiting I have (yet another) plan for trying to keep myself focused and moving forward. (It's hard.)

I've been collecting words in the 2 notebooks I have (one for German, one for French). There's a few pages in each, but I still don't feel like I'm reading enough/amassing enough vocabulary. I made a little chart on an index card where I have 7 little colums for the days of the week. In the left-hand margin I've listd the stuff I'm reading in French, and I have two things I try to cover in German:
Zukunft mit Maß and articles I'm reading out of dasZeit. (I'm sticking with Wirtschaft articles for the time-being. If my Aufsatz comes back with a lousy mark then I'll move beyond "Volkswirtschaft".) If I read every day then each thing gets a check. That way I can keep track.

To make absolutely sure that I'm not just writing down words I've started making index cards to take with me and review when I'm out and about (shuttling the family around and waiting, going to work and waiting, standing in line and waiting etc) I have 200 cards which I've corner marked in gray -- let's face it -- "Wirtschaft" is a "gray" -- just to keep them separate from my French synonym cards :)

I think 200 cards is enough for German. (unlike French) The good thing about knowing a language is that it doesn't take me long to acquire new words. as soon as I'm sure I can use them then I'll just cover them up with new words. Recycle those cards.

I've written too much again. I have to start doing my reading since I have to work tonight and now's the only time to get it done.. So here goes.

So I got my Aufsatz back (he was fast -- even with it being Fasching and all --)

Sie sollten jedes Aufsatzthema noch genauer analysieren. Ich bestätige Ihnen eine große Sprachfähigkeit, sowohl im Ausdruck als auch in der Auswahl und Anwendung der Grammatik, wenngleich beides noch leicht verbesserungsfähig ist. Ihre meist kleinen Grammatik- und Ausdrucksfehler sollten Sie nicht irritieren, sie werden sich vermindern.

That first sentence there was the major criticism. He goes into the points that I would need to make and now in Unit 4 I have a chance to improve the Aufsatz. I'll work on that this weekend....

PS: my German class (die Schüler, work) has now been turned into an English class. I'm not tutoring German anymore -- which is a bit disapointing, in a way, but it's also a relief. Maybe another time and place it will work out again...

Now I can concentrate on my stuff.

just a quick note...

This is what one of my cards looks like. Most of the time I test my knowledge with the English (reverse side). The word is "boosting", so I have to come up with the right German word. Above is a check or an "x" if I miss it.. I said the word "Aufheizung". (That's why i circled the prefix, there..)

Another test is to come up with synonyms right off the bat. "Anheizung" doesn't conjure up anything other thaaan.... "aufputschen" ? Like, "Inflation wird aufgeputscht?" "Aufputschung" probably doesn't work at all.

As far as I know, all the Goethe Inst. tests for the Oberstufe ask for an "Umschreibung" for certain parts of a text. (paraphrasing) It's tedious but synonyms are a great way to increase word power.

I've just sent Übungseinheit 4 to München. It was the revised Aufsatz from ÜE3. I have to start thinking about writing the Aufsätze by hand, without the help of a dict or other word reference book -- yikes. I'm not allowed to use any references. 700 words in 210 minutes -- without help.

I'm halfway through the Schäuble book. The index cards are working out really well. Except I goofed-off this morning (daydreaming away on the computer) and didn't read like I was supposed to. So I don't have any new words to make cards. All the cards with "know it" words have been erased and are waiting for a new batch of words. The number of "don't know it cards" is shrinking -- which is good -- but I need to keep adding more new words. That means I gotta keep reading.

If I keep this up I'll be finished with the book by the end of March. I'll start looking for my next book. It depends what the library has, but it'll probably be Die rote Erzherzogin, which is one of the books for Landeskunde from the Goethe Institute booklist.
