The second poem I loved from Szymborska's Monologue of a Dog follows.
_____ FOTOGRAFIA Z 11 WRZEŚNIA Skoczyli z płonących pięter w dół - jeden, dwóch, jeszcze kilku wyżej, niżej. Fotografia powstrzymała ich przy życiu, a teraz przechowuje nad ziemią ku ziemi. Każdy to jeszcze całość z osobistą twarzą i krwią dobrze ukrytą. Jest dosyć czasu, żeby rozwiały się włosy, a z kieszeni wypadły klucze, drobne pieniądze. Są ciągle jeszcze w zasięgu powietrza, w obrębie miejsc, które się właśnie otwarły. Tylko dwie rzeczy mogę dla nich zrobić - opisać ten lot i nie dodawać ostatniego zdania. _____ PHOTOGRAPH FROM SEPTEMBER 11 They jumped from the burning floors— one, two, a few more, higher, lower. The photograph halted them in life, and now keeps them above the earth toward the earth. Each is still complete, with a particular face and blood well hidden. There’s enough time for hair to come loose, for keys and coins to fall from pockets. They’re still within the air’s reach, within the compass of places that have just now opened. Finally finished La ciudad de las bestias and have clocked over 800 pages read
for the Tadoku Challenge. I haven't touched Mandarin in ages. German's kinda...well, it's just kinda there. Not in the back of my mind like Mandarin, not at the front of it like Spanish. Just chillin'. I've felt oddly compelled to read tons of books in English lately (rebelling against the purpose of Tadoku much?). My favorite of these was Bastard Out of Carolina by Dorothy Allison, which is about a girl growing up in 1950s South Carolina. It's semi-autobiographical and deals with child abuse, family relations, race, gender, and a lot more. And the narrator's voice is one of the strongest I've read. Highly recommended. Planning ahead for the upcoming 6WC. I'll be participating with Mandarin again, so I anticipate finishing those dramas I started a couple months ago...and perhaps reading some of the books I have on hold from the library. While working my way through La ciudad de las bestias, I was struck by how many words I didn't know. And how many words I recognized but couldn't define, and how many I thought I knew that turned out to be something else, and and and...leaving aside the question of becoming near-native in active skills in my target languages, just acquiring a large enough vocabulary to read comfortably is a steep uphill battle. Especially since the words I don't know nag at me, even when I can figure out what they mean in context. I reach for a pad and paper, thinking I'll just write down this one...and before I know it, I've filled another sheet of paper front and back. Then I have to look up those words and write them in a notebook and study them and and and...it's so demanding. There's a reason I think of my languages as children and not as relationship partners. :P All in all, not much to say, but I felt compelled to update nonetheless. I'm improving slowly, and between my current strong dedication to being able to enjoy native materials with ease in my three targets; my utter inability to commit to any single forth language; and my eagerness to devour new books in English, I'm feelin' all right. The Tadoku Challenge ended yesterday, and I came in 27th place with a total of
1121 pages read, 411 of those in German and 710 in Spanish (the highest score for the readers of the latter language!). Time to make some goals for the 6WC. ESPAÑOL 1. Leer tres libros. a. Isabel Allende, El bosque de los pigmeos b. Isabel Allende, El reino del dragón del oro c. Gabriel García Márquez, La increíble y triste historia de la cándida Eréndira y de su abuela desalmada 2. Analizar Aura por Carlos Fuentes y compartir mis pensamientos con mi amigo. 3. Estudiar vocabulario por dos horas cada semana. DEUTSCH 1. Drei Bücher lesen. a. Frank McCourt, Die Asche meiner Mutter (Engl. Angela's Ashes) b. Michael Ende, Momo c. Patrick Süskind, Das Parfum – Die Geschichte eines Mörders 2. Jede Woche für zwei Stunden die Vokabeln lernen. 3. 20 Lang-8 Beiträge schreiben. 中文 1. 看完三部电视剧. a. 一起又看流星雨 b. 衣被天下/天涯织女 c. Undetermined as of yet. 2. 学会2500个汉字. 3. 每周学习生词120分钟. 4. 写 20 Lang-8 帖子. I'd be much obliged to anyone who corrects what I've written above, particularly the Mandarin. The bullet points are just jottings and as such don't have to be complete sentences, but I have the feeling my word order's off nonetheless. Back to work. And a happy 6WC to all the participants! Hi Magadalene, you've definitely been more dedicated to your log than I have. The Chinese
is generally fine. I would just rewrite number 3 as "每周抽出两个小时来学习生词". Por cierto, te importaria si te recomiendo una programa de television? La programa se llama "步步惊心“ y es bastante nueva. Es sobre una muchacha que viaja a traves del tiempo a la dinastia Qing. Ella se envia al palacio y trata de cambiar la politica ademas de la historia.
