There are a bunch from Greenwood Press. The Majority are for Intermeditate learners. However, if you see any, buy them. ---The Story of Minami, Wedding Bells, Current Cantonese Collo, The Feng Shui Master. All of these are great.
They are for intermediate/advanced learners but you should buy them if you see them.

There were only three, very battered copies left, they looked used and some had ripped pages...but...
it is an English language book ISBN: 978-7-5619-1009-2, published by Jinan University that contains 400 sentences. |

That sounds really great. A tip is to check the sentences against a native speaker. I bought a similar book (a large-format green one, not the one you bought) and it contained all sorts of oddities and very old-fashioned stuff that my girlfriend (from Hong Kong) didn't recognize or understand at all. Yours probably doesn't have that problem, but it doesn't hurt to check. |

Will do! Thanks for the tips. The book was published in 2000; this copy was revised in 2008. I will check to see if it is authentic.
An interesting thing about it is that the Cantonese is romanized in IPA format. That seems to be the most straight-forward way to transcribe *any* language, but it's rare to see that for Cantonese. Most Chinese are familiar with the IPA from their studies of English, so this book can help Mandarin speakers pronounce Cantonese.

zhanglong,
Here is the link for Greenwood Press. As I said, I have a lot of these books and I think they are very good.

Thank you so much for the link! I was at another site and could not find one mention of any Cantonese books...

Weekly review:
I am fourteen days into my language learning quest and have a better idea of what I need to do to reach my goal.
Mandarin:
Went to a Mandarin class yesterday and realized how far I have to go. Measure words will become a mini-challenge since my default use of 个 for everything will be okay if I only want to speak, but will hurt my listening comprehension. I'll just have to learn them one by one until I have most of the common measure words in my daily vocabulary.
Cantonese:
Reinforced my knowledge of Pimsleur 1-5 and had a native speaker correct my pronunciation. My Mandarin teacher, who is also a native born Guangzhou person, told me that the best way to learn Cantonese is to find a native speaker to just speak to on a regular basis.
As things become more complex, I have to set a fixed minimum schedule for my language learning otherwise I won't get in all the work I have to do.
And I must avoid wandering to other, more "exotic", languages when the two I am studying seem difficult.

Off to Hong Kong!
I have no idea what to expect, but let's see how far Pimsleur takes me. I'll try to avoid speaking *any* English for the next two days and see how it pans out.

zhanglong,
Have a good trip. Be prepared for a lot of responses back in English. However, hold your ground and don't give up the language battle. I can't wait to hear how you get along.

Yeah, some people on Hong Kong Island and in TST will have a thing about speaking Cantonese with Westerners. Go off to the New Territories (my girlfriend lives in Tuen Mun, say hi!) and you'll find people much more happy to speak Canto with you.
