I'm also very interested in how people fare with L-R. Started from a similar level as you, with la piedra filosofal,
too, but I'm only reading thru books once, just because I want to read more books. You're doing a more 'pure'
method, by reading several times. Looking forward to your impressions.

@LangOfChildren: I find it hard to gauge my process. I find that with more and more words I can hear them, distinguish them and attach meaning to them. This is when I read along really well.
When I do not read along and just listen, I do know what is happening most of the time. So I can follow the plot really easily and follow most sub-plots. However, I do miss a lot more words. So knowing what is coming in advance really helps me still. And now, because it is in total about my fifth read through, following the plot may be a lot easier since I know it so well.
In two days, I will start with la cámara secreta. Since I hardly know the plot beforehand (watched the movie about three years ago and don't plan on reading it in Dutch beforehand), it will be interesting to see how much harder it is to follow than la piedra filosofal.

@Tbone: I hear you when you say you want to read more books. I too think it is more fun when you read every book only once. But for the sake of learning how to learn a language (plan on learning German after I achieve at least basic fluency in Spanish), I want to start my LR adventure by doing it closely following the original. Also, when reading a single book three times, I really get bang for my buck;). Maby, when I start experimenting, I will not follow the original so closely.

In general, after I have reached a stage of natural listening in my opinion, I will also try the shadowing part of LR. Most probably, I wont be transcribing.

Wishing you every success on your first LR adventure. The audiobook for "Harry Potter y la piedra filosofal" has a wonderful narrator, as I recall, and 20 hours over just 4 days is a magnificent start. Keep up the good work! :)

Thanks Teango, your LR log was one of my biggest inspirations. Immersing myself with 10 hours of Spanish a day is something I cannot yet do.
Your result, B1-B2 level of reading after only 91 hours of LR, is something I hope to come close to. Probably not in my first block, since that is only 50 hours, but after two blocks.

I do have a question for you however. As I just reread your last post of Fighting Windmills, I noticed how much more thorough you handled your LR. Way more thorough than proposed in the original thread.
Right now, I am not looking up any words, or even using parallel texts (as I don't have them). I just use the Dutch book and the Spanish audiolibro. Also, I just listen to the book as a whole, instead of repeating small chunks.
As a result of this (not having a parallel text and thus not reading any Spanish, only listening to Spanish), I fear that my reading isn't going to improve as much as it has with your LR. On the other hand, my reading will probably catch on really quickly if I can almost understand everything I hear by doing some L2-L2 LR work.

Thanks in advance!

Done for the day. Couldn't hack 5 hours, there just wasn't any concentration from my part. Quite disappointing. Understood a lot less than yesterday, which wasn't good either. I guess it had to do with the fact that it is my third round through in 5 days and it just wasn't interesting any more.

07-06-2011 Day 5
2 hours LR Harry Potter y la piedra filosofal
Total: 22 hours

Decided to stop today. I don't want to force myself into LR or studying Spanish as I am in fact doing this for fun and satisfaction.
Tomorrow I will try to pick the pace up again, this time with Harry Potter y la cámara secreta, a book that I am way less familiar with. Excited about this.

Last evening, I found myself thinking Spanish sometimes. Well, let me rephrase that. A lot of Spanish phrases just kept popping into my head, without me sometimes knowing what they meant. This was a good thing to happen halfway through this experiment.

Keep going! I know it can get boring after a while, and taking a break from the first
book is probably not a bad idea. Hopefully you can regain some motivation tomorrow when
you start the second one.

This is a great sign! And just another reason not to give up now!

Thanks for your kind words, supertom.

I'm not sure what your question was in the previous post, but in terms of my approach last summer, I recall experimenting and trying out plenty of different angles. The main thing (and I know it probably sounds quite corny by now) is to select materials you can really get into and then focus on what you really enjoy. Then you'll be coming back for more...

Parallel texts are certainly a big help, when you can get your hands on them, and I'd encourage anyone interested in L-R to re-read through Atamagaii's original inspiring thoughts on the subject from time to time, as well as Volte's posts and collections. They really help rekindle that initial passion!

And don't worry...it's natural for you to want to slow things down on the 5th day. The same thing happened to me (see Dreams of Valhalla). I was going to mention it in my last post but didn't want to tempt fate. So like LangOfChildren says, just keep going - you're off to a great start, and don't worry about occasionally taking time out, it's also an essential part of the game.

I'm particularly fascinated by your purer approach, and will be following your logs with great interest. :)

Thanks LoC and Teango, I really like the kind words. So, instead of only doing 2 hours this day like a pansy, I decided that I should just man up and log 5 hours.

So I started with two more hours of pure listening to HP1 while walking en el centro. When I got home, I started with Harry Potter y la Cámara Secreta and finished the first hour L-reading it.
The second narrator is less pleasant to hear, so that is a minus. However, the story is mostly new to me so that is very cool.
So a new update:

07-06-2011 Día 5
2 hours LR Harry Potter y la piedra filosofal
2 hours listening Harry potter y la piedra filosofal
1 hour LR Harry Potter y la cámara secreta
Total: 25 hours
