I usually try to do one big streak of 3 or 3.5 hours. During this time I do take the occasional 2-5 min break but only to take a piss or get some coffee. After those first 3-3.5 hours I take a larger break to get some decent lunch or something, because doing it for 5 hours straight just wouldn't be possible for me.
Then, after my lunch, I complete the last 1,5-2 hours.
Today, I am a bit hangover. Had a party last night were they served buckets of malibu coke, so that was was great. Hopefully I will be able to get some decent hours in today.

Buckets?? Now that's the type of party I'm talking about! :)
Good luck today. You've kept up this impressive pace for 7 days, and as you said, there's just a few days left to go now...

Yeah, buckets.. There was about 1/3 litre of malibu in a bucket with 3/4 litre of cola with it. So it was a great party. The life of a student isn't so hard sometimes..
Today went pretty well. Finished 1.5 hour L-reading HP2 and 3.5 listening to HP1. For this listening I do the following:
The audiobook of HP1 is 9 hours long, and devided in about 125 pieces of 5 minutes. So what I do is that I select all those 125 pieces on my iphone and then set it to shuffle. That way, you can't just follow the story and let that guide you through your listening. Now, you have to keep on listening because you never know when the previous part ends and the next part somewhere else in the story begins. This keeps me concentrated. It went great. Almost always, I could understand what was going on in the first line or two of a new piece. I also noted when the story just suddenly skipped to a whole new storyline. I guess this means that I can follow the first book really well, even if I don't always have the storyline to tell me where I am in the story.

3.5 horas Listening to Harry Potter y la piedra filosofal
1.5 horar LR Harry Potter y la Cámara Secreta

As I already said earlier, it is getting more and more difficult to complete the days.
11-06-2011 Día 9/10
3.75 horas LR Harry Potter y la Cámara Secreta
1.25 horas Listening Harry Potter y la piedra filosofal
Total: 45 horas
Tomorrow, I will need to LR about three more hours of HP y la cámara secreta to complete it for the second time with LR. To complete the experiment, I will probably do two more horas of listening to random parts of HP1 and HP2.
Glad it is almost over.
Nine down, one more to go!

Kick-start Spanish by using Listening-Reading
Here I am, ten days later. I feel good, glad that I managed to stick to my goal of 5 hours a day for 10 days straight. I must say, it isn't easy but it is maby one of the best, interesting and fun learning experiences in my life. Certainly when I only count my language learning experiences as I only used classroom based courses before.
The Plan
I started this experience because I really want to learn Spanish. Have been wanting to learn it for quite a few years now, but never managed to have the time to really do it (I study a math based subject at university and row at a sub-international level, so apart from my studies, I train about 10x/week). However, at the moment I am injured and that will not heal before the end of this season, so I have spare time.
Since my high school experience with learning French was a disaster, I didn't want to learn Spanish by using a school like approach.
As I looked into the subject of learning languages, I found this website. It is great!
I had never heard of techniques like shadowing or LR before. As I started reading, I decided to really try this, as it looked like a way more natural method for learning Spanish.
Soon, my choice became LR to kick-start my Spanish studies, mainly because of the great threat by Volte and the log of Teango. So, thanks again for that guys!
The plan was to do 10 days of five hours each and hoped for kind of the same results as I had read at the forums. My thought was that I couldn't possibly hurt myself or my Spanish learning by doing it and that I would have a great chance of getting something great out of it.
The Experience
I started of really well with two days of 6 hours each. It went pretty well, things were already beginning to click. Learning this way was really entertaining I thought! However, I soon realized that it wasn't all butterflies and rainbows, the method does take it out of you.
Most of the days, I divided my five hours into a big chunk of 3-3.5 hours and a smaller chunk of 1.5-2 hours. The first chunk was really entertaining most of the time, only became work during the last half hour or so. The second chunk, although shorter, was the same in that it only became work during the last half hour.
The last few days, I was with my family. Not in my usual habitat, something that always stirs up my learning. But even though it was harder to do five hours, I did managed to stick with it.
Now, after 10 days, 50 hours and about 450.000 Spanish words, I am a bit tired, but satisfied.
What I Learned
- The first and foremost thing that I got out of this experience is that I am no longer intimidated by Spanish. Spanish is just another language, just like English or Dutch. Something that CAN be learned IF I put the time into it.
Words no longer seem to string together, they are separate. Spanish now makes sense.
- My vocabulary has really increased. I have no idea how big my passive vocabulary now is and to be frank, I don't really care.
I do know that I still miss A LOT of words, but that I also know A LOT of words. I never expected my comprehension to be 90% after doing only 50 hours of LR.
Sometimes, when I am listening to fragments of HP1, I can understand every word for a period of a minute. Some other times, when I am listening to fragments of HP1, I can understand only 30% of what I am hearing. So it varies a lot.
- I also learned that it is way more fun to listen to new books than repeating the same book. However, the second run through a book gives you the opportunity to really pay attention to the audio (I didn't read the second book in advance). Doing three runs through the same book makes it a real chore, something that I will not do any more.
So, the next time I LR a book, I will go through it twice and then move onto the next!
The Next Step
What I need to do now to take my Spanish to a much higher level, is going through a good book. I selected Assimil Spanish with Ease for this, as it is known for how fun it is to learn from.
Even though I think LR is a GREAT method, I don't think it should be ones only way of studying. I think that when I start with Assimil next week, I will constantly have 'ah, yes, I saw that already during my LR, now I finally really know what it is' moments. Also, grammar, vocabulary, writing, speaking, is something that I think I can learn very well with using Assimil.
After Assimil Spanish with Ease, and having gained a lot of additional vocab and grammar training, I want to do another 50 hour cycle of LR. This combination is something that I think is going to get me to a good solid B1-B2 base in Spanish in the least time possible. I think this, because everything that I am going to learn from Assimil will be repeated over and over again during the second 50 hours of LR.
After this, I will probably go through another course to fortify my grammar/speaking/writing/vocab. And then another cycle of LR and so forth.
I think one needs about 100 hours to really get everything out of Assimil Spanish with Ease. So there you have my next 100 hours. I think I will continue to log in this thread, as I do plan to do more LR in the future.
Hopefully I can say the following in about two months time:
First cycle of LR : 50 hours
Assimil Spanish : 100 hours
Second cycle of LR: 50 hours
Total &nb sp; : 200 hours
Level &nb sp; : B2
Thanks again for everyone that followed me this far ( and managed to read through this whole post!).
