Very busy day today. Had a great party last night too. The board of next year was announced, so that called for a celebration. Hence, I woke up way too late today, did manage to do quite a lot though.

Assimil went great today. Lección 6 dealt with Tener/Haber, which was great, as I didn't really knew the rules for this. Did know that they both meant something with have, now I know the real rules. So that was good.
Lección 7 was my first review lesson, so nothing special here.
Lección 8 wasn't very special. Covered some new vocab, so that was good. The speed has increased as of this lesson also. I mean, the talking speed. So that is good.

Michel Thomas is always nice to do. Somehow, he immediately makes you speak big sentences. Also, it was funny to see some of the new words I learned from Assimil being used here to, like cansada for tired.

Reading was good too. L2-L2 reading comprehension is pretty good in my opinion, as long as it isn't a very difficult passage.

In my opinion, reading like this is the only way to really enforce grammatical points into memory. The practice I had with tener/haber in just this hour is way more than I would have had when I only did Assimil. Already starting to see the results of Assimil on my Spanish in this way!

@ Knuffix: Thanks for the name, but most of the time I just download the audio book via a torrent, so I will probably not need it.
The way you describe my L2-L2 is exactly how I do it. Since you read along, it is really easy to see when words end and start. You also don't miss any words being spoken. Hence, it is both great reading practice and great listening practice. In about 10 or so more hours of LR L2-L2 I will return to some more L1-L2, but I wrote on this earlier.

So you first read without audio and in the next step with audio?

No, not exactly.

During my LR experiment in the beginning of my log (50 hours is 10 days) I only did L1-L2. This means that I listened to the Spanish audio while reading slightly ahead in Dutch. That way, I knew what I was going to hear in the next Spanish sentence and could thus make connections. These 50 hours of L1-L2, I did solely with HP1 and HP2. Hence, I know these texts fairly detailed in my head already.

Now, I want to improve my reading more. And since I already really know the stories of HP1 and HP2, I don't really need the Dutch books any more. So now, I read in Spanish as I am listening in Spanish at the same time. This is what I call L2-L2. This way, I can connect what I learned before with what is written down. It also helps me to really distinguish between the words that are spoken.

Good day again. Completed the first cd of Assimil with this 11th lección. Learned about the clock, going to bed etc in lección 9. Learned the difference between ser/estar in lección 10, although I already knew this. Lección 11 covered some new vocab, but no real important grammatical points.

Michel Thomas was nice. My responses are becoming way more fluent now. I never pause the CD and always find myself being able to respond in the time given. I think this has mainly to do with the fact that I already have a great passive understanding of most of the vocab/grammar in these first few CD's, that converting to the active use is way more easy.

For the L2-L2, I today finished HP1. I find myself being able to de construct most of the sentences while reading and listening. This is great, as this shows that my comprehension keeps improving every day.

Total of four hours today, I am on a roll!

Tonight, Springbreak! Really looking forward to this. Before that, a nice bbq with some friends:)

Bit of a struggle today. Had a pretty bad hangover from Spring-break last night, so didn't woke up until 1200h. Also had some work to do.
Assimil was pretty easy today. Lesson 12 dealt with some family matters, 'entre vecinos'. Not really difficult, but good to really see the distinction between son, daughter, kid, child etc, as while reading they kind of mean the same so it is difficult to distinguish.
Lesson 13 was rehearsal and lesson 14 was also revision of old notes.

Michel Thomas was good too. Half way through the foundation course. Four more to go.
Edit: Also, this CD dealt with haciendo. I just wasn't able to make sense of that word up till now. Now, I finally know that it means the same as the normal haber forms, but you use the -iendo ending when it is happening right now! Nice:)

As for my reading, today I started reading HP2, so that is nice. 10 more hours of reading a story I already know, then it is off to new stories in HP3!

Thank you so much for writing this excellent log! To be honest, it is kind of annoying
to read the logs with people who constantly have trouble sticking to their goals and
keep publicly presenting their excuses to themselves. (One reason I don't keep one!)
And you are definitely not like that, always so on track, I admire you very much for
that.

Anyway. As much as it should be inspiring... your log, that is, ... it is very
depressing to me! If only for the fact that I began LR on Spanish probably a short time
BEFORE you, and still haven't made the progress you claim to have made by your 3rd and
4th report. Ironically enough, I've done Pimsleur level 1 -- so it is a really good
comparison to check my own progress by comparing myself with you. I wonder if it was
the Michael Thomas that made you have so much better results. After twice through a 500
page book and once through the second in the same series, I *cannot* listen to the
audio without the book at all. WHILE reading the book with the audio, I can identify a
ton of nouns and adjectives, but I doubt I can understand more than 2 or 3 verbs. If I
do listen to the audio of a chapter I *just* completed, I can mentally picture the
scenes and what is going on -- but it is mostly based on picking out one random word
every 2 or 3 sentences. In short, *nothing* like the progress you made.

Any ideas what it could be? Maybe I need to quit and do Michael Thomas, and then repeat
the 2 books I've done so far. (Twilight series)

One thing that comes to mind is that you are working on Twilight, an adult book, and I am working on Harry Potter, a childrens book. That probably makes my book way more easy to read than yours. Words are easier, grammatical structures are probably easier. HP probably uses the same words more often because of the more limited vocabulary, hence, I get more exposure to the same words.

Also to my benefit, HP1 and HP2 take slightly less than 10 hours of audio to complete. So my knowledge of the books is probably far better than yours, since I have read/listened to them way more often.
When I try to just Listen to a unknown audiobook, or read an unknown passage in a book, my comprehension is way lower than when I really know what to expect.

But in my opinion, really knowing what to expect is one of the main elements needed for LR to succeed. Because it is at the moment that you know what is coming up in the audio, that you can fully concentrate on connecting the Spanish to what you know that is coming up.

So maybe you might try out a slightly easier book first? I try to LR my way through the Harry Potter series and I think that when I have completed all of them, I should have a reasonable reading/listening ability up to the children's standard. It is only after that, that I will try and work my way up to the adult books.

AND, start a log here! It really helps with the motivation. I for one will surely follow it!

One last question, did you LR for really long periods, or do you do 1-2 hours every day?

Decided not to do three lessons of Assimil today. The reason being that those first two lessons were quite grammar heavy. They dealt with pronouns and the imperative. Need that to sink in more before doing more lessons today.

Michel Thomas also dealt with pronouns and the imperative this CD, so that was nice. Two times the same grammar, but explained differently is always good.

Reading was good to. You really start to see the pronouns and imperative forms when you just learned them from Assimil and MT. Have completed chapters 1-4 of HP2 now, so that is going great.

Something new for me, the scriptorium. For this I used the dialogues of Assimil. I used the basic method of Alexander Arguelles, namely:

1.    Take a sentence and read it aloud.
2.    Speak aloud again as you write it carefully.
3.    Read the sentence aloud from what you have written.

The more thorough method involves checking all the words and grammar and really learn what it says. But since I have already done this during my normal lessons of Assimil, I skip that. Went by quite fast I must say. I read that doing it for 15 minutes a day was recommended, so that was what I did.
