Hey! So this is where you are!
I was wondering why you had fallen off my chart, and was worrying that you had fallen off the wagon, but I see now that instead you have jumped on a train! As someone who works for the railways, and who intends to take my father in law on the Trans-Siberian some day ( I just need to learn Russian, and a little bit of Mongolian and Mandarin first...) I think this is an amazing idea!!!
I look forward to following both your language studies and the trip itself - lovely with all this information from the stops along the way!

Yesterday, I thought the exact same thing. So I looked you up on my telephone and saw that you had moved back to the third page!
Seems that you are doing way better than I am in terms of hours spend. We both started on almost the same date (your log started on 7th of June and mine on the fourth), but you seem to have put in over 150 hours already! Good job for you man and congrats on reaching a B1 level in Russian so bloody fast!
Hope to read an update sometime soon :)
O yeah, one question. How do you find your progress compared to your previous studies such as German? Do you notice that you move considerably slower because Russian is known to be difficult, or do you find that because of your previous experiences with learning languages has helped you so much that that cancels out? Because 150 hours spend on Russian to reach B1 level seems very good to me. Probably another 150 to reach B2 at the speed that you are going and then it is all just fun from there as you can use solely native materials and just read read read.

It's true...there are so many amazing places in the world; but the most beautiful growing realisation is that even the most dismal destinations can offer up bewitching wonders (and yes, I'm sober and haven't touched a self-help book since my misty teens ;) ).
Ironically, it's only now, after trying to escape the banality of small-pond life in the UK, that I'm slowly coming to terms with how much incredible beauty there is all around me on my very own doorstep. All I need to do is open up to opportunities more, listen to myself, and take the time to look around. For some reason, and as simple as this may sound, I find this incredibly difficult to do. I guess I still have a long way to go, but at least I'm starting to learn to appreciate the grass on this side of the fence... :)
@Solfrid Cristin
Privet solntse - great to have you pop by! And no worries, I'm still here, alive and kicking. :) Truth be told, my wagon has lost both its wheels and the horse has long since bolted for the hills (I'll explain more shortly). However, you know that won't keep me grounded for long, and I'll be up and back on the Russian Harry Potter trail in no time. Gee up Teango! (lol)
@supertom
That's 150 hours of Russian so far this year (starting in January). This pales into insignificance next to your 110 hours of Spanish over the last month and a half. So this is you at the moment:
And here's me on a blue sky day:
Keep up this awesomeness and you'll be in Havana by next week! ;)
German was much easier for me partly because I did a bit at school (which for some bizarre reason seemed to stick after all these years), and also the language is much closer to English than Russian. Previous experience with other languages does help to some extent, but when you've never learned a Slavic language before, Russian grammar is like a briar patch for the uninitiated.
The infuriating thing is that I've swiftly risen to B2 level in reading before with German, French, Spanish and Swedish and no more than 4,000 passive words, but even after 8,000 words and several repeated attempts, I'm still languishing around B1 in Russian. So yeah...it's much harder (well, at least for my post-critical-period sieve of a brain lol), but that's not going to stop me. I'm going to beat this thing and win my wacky race if it's the last thing I do...

The Ural Sidecar Motorcycle would make for a cute thread for two. :))

QUICK UPDATE
I've been ill over the last few weeks, so you could say I've been forced to stay in my virtual Kirov a while longer than anticipated, waiting for the wagon to be repaired.
I should actually be up in Aberdeen right now, celebrating my cousin's wedding in Fyvie castle (flights and hotel all booked), but sadly won't be able to make the festivities and indulge in a bit of Scots as planned...
[ Phew! That's the lawn finished. Now for the windows... ]
[ Keep playing Dùghlas, the guests are bound to arrive soon... ]
*big sigh*

LOL. This made my day!! :D Seriously though, in these days of heavy satire, I find it so very refreshing and revitalising to hear that there actually exists people who dare to appreciate the beauty of the world. :)
