Skipping some 17 pages, on which undoubtedly there will be similar thoughts, for neessary feats I advocate determination and curiosity. Not having to waste time on mundane thngs like getting a survival income helps, too. Most everybody learns a first language. I see no reason that most youngsters, if sufficiently exposed to more languages, should not be able to pick up a substantial number, already from a fairly humble IQ score. 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

I believe anyone can learn a language.
To tell the truth - I HATE things that say I cannot do this, I cannot do that. Esentially, The first post suggests that i will not become a hyperglot, such as Mezzofanti and the likes. Well, I have no idea, maybe I will, maybe I won't, but one thing is for sure, I HATE IT. I cannot stand somethign that tells me - You can't learn this many language because you're an average human being, You can't learn do this because you're not special. And everytime I come across somethign that tells me that, I vow to beat it. If that tells me I will never become a Hyperglot, I will become one (hopefully). To become a hyperglot requires an IQ of at least 85. This is one standard deviation below the mean putting one in the top 84% of the population. It takes more hard work and determination than anything else.

I really believe than any healthy individual could become an hyperglot with a lot of determination, dedication and a favourable setting. By that I mean many opportunities for immersion.
What good would an IQ of 165 be if the owner of that number did nothing and didn't want to do anything but watch daytime television and soap operas amongst other mind-numbing activities? Not a lot. Your IQ marks your ability to do IQ tests: nothing else.
As for <70 = mental retardation, nonsense. The figure was invented by an educational psychologist in London. The council had a certain number of special education units with a limited number of places. This guy looked at the bell-curve distribution of IQs and found that the number of places matched the number of children scoring less than around 69 on IQ tests. So the figure of 70 was chosen to allow the council to quickly fill the schools. Mental problems and learning difficulties can't be determined by anything as crude as an IQ test, but most are plainly obvious in face-to-face assessments by competent psychologists and teachers. 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

i estimate that you need at least an IQ of around 70+. So if you're not severely
