Day 21:

Learned another syllable: tsa.

This syllable is reminiscent of ca, with an added stroke on the upper right.

I am currently looking for Tibetan flashcard software. While I can write my own, it's always good to see what others have done before to avoid reinventing the wheel.

Day 22:

Learned another syllable: tsha

It is similar to the syllable cha with the addition of an added stroke to the upper right.

I also decided to order the text: An Introduction to Classical Tibetan by Stephen Hodge and have it delivered to China. It may take a few weeks and may not even make it through Customs, but it's only a book on an ancient form of a language.

What could possibly go wrong?

I've recently uploaded about 50 of my Tibetan flashcard lists to the BYKI List Central website. I'll be adding lots more over the next few weeks. I'm focusing on doing flashcards for all the lessons in Colloquial Tibetan first, as that's the book we're using on the course, but I'm planning to do lists for the Manual of Standard Tibetan lessons too, as well as themed lists (animals, colours, family etc.) as and when I have time.

Learned a new syllable, na, that looks almost like a cursive "l".

I miss the fact that I don't have a book I can refer to. Even though electronic resources are excellent, they are not 100% portable. A cell phone can run out of power and a computer can be denied access to the internet.

But there is something to be said for a well-worn, dog-eared collection of paper whose pages have grown musty and cracked over years of daily use. A book can be your companion in places not even the best ipad can comfortably go.

I so agree with you!! As much as I love the internet resources etc, it's a whole different feeling to being able to flick though the pages of a book, and for me so much easier too! LOVE books!! :o)

I shall be following your journey with much interest :o) thanks for sharing with us :o) x

Thanks for the encouragement!

There is no "practical" reason to learn Tibetan, I guess, unless you place a value on learning new things and discovering things about the world that you never knew before.

I find that although the time I spend each day on this is negligible compared to time spent studying other things, this is the one that brings me the most...peace.

Doing something for the sake of doing it, and having no other end is a form of recreation.

Day 23:

Inspired by David's example, I created a set of flashcards on Quizlet for the 30 syllables of the Tibetan syllabary.
