The recent "reading only poll" got me curious about this.

By love I mean an intimate physical relationship with an L2 speaker (of the boyfriend/girlfriend, husband/wife, etc
type). I'm not talking about nanny/infant, parent/child, human/machine, etc.

Also, I mean either love of a single person who you admire, or love of individual L2 speakers in general.
Please share experiences and confessions.

Watch out! You said "opposite sex"! You may want to be careful there...

My answer is, absolutely. I can't share a personal experience because the type of love that has drawn me to languages has been more of a love affair with the entire language and culture than with any specific person – although as soon as I devote myself to a language, anyone who speaks that language immediately becomes more attractive to me.

But here's a true story: my uncle, an average American who had gotten divorced in middle age, met a vibrant Brazilian woman while on a trip in Brazil, fell in love (although neither could understand a word of the other's language), brought her home and married her. My new aunt has been doing her best to learn English, but it's difficult for her, because my uncle learned Portuguese so unbelievably fast that he now speaks it fluently and therefore it automatically became the language both of them use at home. I don't think he ever learned another language before he met her.

Certainly, I would. Although I have never had such an experience.

That is quite interesting that your uncle married before they could communicate with
each other - I guess love is a universal language (cliché way to put it). I guess
everyone is human though, so a language barriers are not much of a problem if at least
one of the individuals is willing to learn.

If I had a partner who did not speak English, I think I would definitely learn their
language - to be courteous, show my dedication and not to mention get free practise!

The funny thing is that I actually am! Actually, I'm learning the language much faster than my other ones that I have
gone after in the past so it's interesting.

I've learnt for much less than that so I'll definitely learn for love.
