There's nothing here yet, but I'll ask folks connected with the social media if they are even aware of the issue. Things will be very interesting in the next few weeks, it appears.

I mentioned it to my girlfriend in Hong Kong, who said: "Yeah, that's China for you. No linguistic freedom. So it won't matter how much people protest".
Kind of makes me want to go to China and get arrested.

Well, it's funny you mention it. My Cantonese coworkers are discussing the issue now and the general impression is one of resignation to the New Order. If they march in the streets, I'll be there too; let's see what happens before March 1st.

2011 - December 27th:
Today, I had a rare but wonderful study session with someone who drilled my pronunciation and memory of some very basic Cantonese phrases. The book we were using was written in Mandarin so that Mandarin speakers could learn Cantonese. Like many Cantonese, it uses its own romanization scheme, but includes the characters.
More on this marvelous book, later...

The book is part of a series of texts designed to teach Mandarin speakers, the wonders of Cantonese.
It's name is: "即学即用广州话". It's a small book, a little more than 200 pages, printed on relatively inexpensive paper, but it's quite useful in many ways.
1) It teaches the Guangzhou variety of Cantonese, considered "the standard dialect". If I learn the language in this text, I can use it everywhere in Guangdong province and Hong Kong, and be understood.
2) It's based on local dialogues appropriate to my language goal. I want to learn Cantonese for social reasons, so the dialogues reflect social interactions in daily life.
3) Since most of the text is in Mandarin, it's like learning an L(x+1) through an L(x).
4) Carrying the book around Guangzhou makes all the local people want to speak to me more!

So, I've decided to join the TAC for 2012. I'm not quite sure how the TAC is supposed to work, but I'm sure to learn in the coming weeks.
In the spirit of the TAC, I'll not only post my progress in the language, but also talk about other interesting things or provide resources relating to Chinese or Cantonese culture, and language learning in general.

As noted in the Team 龍 TAC thread:
Cantonese
Current level: A1
Goal: B1
Environment: Social
Despite issues with the various romanizations for Cantonese, I will only concentrate on listening and speaking Cantonese, so this task seems doable.
My daily plan will be simple.
A minimum of a half hour a day of active listening to Cantonese and a minimum of twice a week speaking to a native speaker.
This is just my initial plan.
Learning materials:
* Pimsleur Cantonese is my friend.
* Teach Yourself Cantonese - the dialogues
* Cantodict
These essentials will be supplemented by as many native materials as I can find.
The end goal will be to be able to converse with a native speaker about general topics in daily life.
Each week, I will post a summary of my language learning progress and provide a website that I think will be useful to the community.
This week's website was already mentioned above:
Cantodict
It's the premier Cantonese dictionary on the web, containing many Cantonese only characters and expressions, a wealth of material on learning Cantonese, an emphasis on JyutPing romanization that makes it easier to enter and look up entries using a computer, and a lively and knowledgeable community of speakers and learners.
