Day 05:

I listened to another half hour of Cantonese, practiced speaking the nine expressions above, and read the Introduction to Yip and Matthews' Basic Cantonese.

The 即学即用广州话 book is useful for its vocabulary and use of real speech, but I'm beginning to lean towards Teach Yourself Cantonese for learning faster, simply because the romanization system is more consistent and I don't have to guess what character they mean, nor do I have to switch between the traditional character set and the simplified.

The ultimate test for me in Cantonese is to be able to listen to a two hour movie and have a normal conversation with a native speaker, so I need to devote more time to listening and speaking activities.

Wouldn't youtube work great for that?

It would if I were in Hong Kong, but in Mainland China, youtube presents some challenges.

I'm assuming if I used a proxy it would be possible.

That should be ge2. It acts as a question particle.

ge = 嘅
ga = o架 (the letter o representing the 口 radical)

> "hea" (pron. as in "health", first tone, meaning "To relax, leisurely") and "fing" (jyutping "fing4", meaning to toss or fling)

I'm not sure if that jyutping has a different tone numbering system, but just in case, here are the tones of those two words using the standard/common tone numbering system:

hea - tone 3, same as the word "四 four".
fing - tone 6, same as the word "二 two".

Tell that to my girlfriend. She uses "ga" for 嘅 and uses the character 㗎 (or just 架).

Thanks. I caught the "fing6" and corrected it myself in a later post than the one you quoted, but the "he3" one I
had wrong. It's annoying when there's no character for it in CantoDict, since you can't look it up. It shows in
example sentences, but you can't search for it.

Day 23:

I listened to 1.5 hours of Cantonese audio and shadowed what I heard.

I also logged into CantoneseClass101 and did some of their lessons for half an hour. I've discovered some interesting things about their material. They are still working on their accuracy. Sometimes it feels as if we are beta-testing their Cantonese classes, but I've just started their lessons, so I won't judge them yet.

Lately, I've been stretching the limits of my conversational abilities. I can speak longer and longer without pausing or looking for a new word.

Let's see how far I can go.

Day 24:

I went to see a Cantonese movie; while I couldn't isolate many individual words yet, I could understand the general gist of the movie by watching body language and following the plot.

It was a romantic comedy, a pleasant enough diversion, though it was unsettling at first to see Ip Man playing an electric guitar. :)
