I just had a Super Duper Mega idea: - You add Russian (Super Duper - conversation) - I add Spanish (Advanced Super Duper - conversation) We both get committed to a mental hospital which would give us lots of extra time for reading, as well as time for conversing in our languages with each other. Your mental hospital or mine? (:-) PS. We might even get Serpent and Anya and Kerrie to join us, which would give us two native Russian speakers and an advanced French speaker as well. I just added a second challenge (Advanced Mega) for English - I guess I'll fill the reading part with many scientific

Cristina. You are evil. :D I have been mulling over the idea of adding Russian and Portuguese both to my challenges, but . . . then I really WOULD need to be committed. In fact, I ordered the English-based Russian Assimil course this week, and hopefully it will be here soon. I kind of told myself I would wait, but . . . I have also been thinking about signing up for Turkish, just for films. It would give me a really good excuse to go "waste time" watching those Turkish dramas that my friend got me interested in earlier in the year. You guys have your own mental hospitals? I have never been invited to a mental hospital before. What do I have to do to get committed? Here's a question, sorry if I missed this in the rules: How do we count conversations that are not one-on-one? That is, if there is more than one person talking and we do not happen to be one of the more active participants, do we still count it as conversation or as listening?
I went to a big dinner party with a lot of Russian speakers. At our table, people were mostly speaking Russian, but there was a clear social hierarchy with the two more prominent members doing most of the speaking and everyone else (including other native speakers) mostly listening. I did get to speak, but not that much considering that I was there for a couple hours. So I was wondering if I count as conversation only the times I was making contributions or the times I was listening in but not really contributing. (On the upside, even though group discussions are my weak point and I usually get extremely nervous, this time I didn't worry so much and actually did some speaking. Also, I could actually understand everyone whereas usually noise and the presence of multiple conversations make it difficult for me to follow along.) 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Just count the whole time as conversation time. It varies how much you say in a conversation anyway, so
unless one says nothing at all, it can be counted. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||
