Hehe, I know. ;-) I was just trying to clarify, because sometimes I sound like the Lone Ranger of learning or something, and I don't always think things can be learned totally alone.
Yesterday I had lunch with a recently retired professor of French. I never took a class with him, but from what I've heard he was an excellent teacher. They said that the foreign language department here was truly lessened (I think that's the word?) by his leaving.

In order to sum up my take on the subject of autodidaticism I would like weave an analogy between Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto's opinion regarding ordinary military proceedures and my own concerning what has been deemed getting a "forma l education.
Yamamoto's towards ordinary military proceedures are said to have very much been akin to that of a bachelor when contemplating the idea of a wife - a very good idea, but for other people.
His drive allowed him,as the CIC of the Imperial Japanese Combined Fleet,to draw up his nation's war plans against the united states and make him one of histories most well known figures.
It's the same with autodidaticism. The truly gifted ones will, invariably follow down the path of self-directed learning.Incompetent teachers and mediocre classmates and the frustration that arises from being unable to truly dive into one's field of interest unrestrained is bond to make anyone with half a brain put it all behind their backs and decide to face the whole world on his own.
However, for most of the world's population who truly lacks intelect and imagination, autodidaticism wouldn't work;this is because they wouldn't know what to learn, because they fail to understand how interesting the world truly is.
