If this happens, I'll probably join with Mandarin.

It's okay if we're at an ~A1 level, right?

Count me in! If I managed to finish French With Ease until then, I'll try working through
Using French. Otherwise, I might just pick up Italian or perhaps Portuguese. So excited
already!

The goal is to see how far Assimil alone can get you, and to see if we really can learn
with only 30" a day.

Based on the previous posts, let me offer this as a beginning framework:

1. Start time: anytime November 1 - 31. End time: May 31.
Duration: 6 months, +/- 4 weeks.   I would be flexible if people want to start
earlier or later, but we'll open the official threads on November 1.

2. We'll try two levels: Beginners for total beginners, or those who have never
progressed past an A1. Intermediate for those who are around A2 / B1, and who
will use one of the advanced courses.

3. Commitment: 1) To not use other courses or active styles of learning for the
duration (including skype chats, lang8, etc). I think passive exposure would be fine
(movies, music, etc). 2) To use Assimil 'as directed.' 3) To not race!!! 4) To post
regularly in the forum. This last part is important - if we don't log and discuss our
progress then there's not much point to the whole experiment! My rec would be to log
every week, or every seven lessons, even if it's only a line or two.

4. Threads: We'll keep this one open for discussion, questions, logistics, and
planning. In October I'll start a Registration thread for people to select
their language, and admit to any prior experience : )   In November we'll open the
official Assimil Experiment Log for everyone to post their updates in.

5. I don't know how to make a Twitter Bot, but I think that would be nice to
have also.

6. I think if would be good if we all did an online self-assessment at the
beginning and end, but I don't know of any good free ones.

Any thoughts?

The free self-assessments will be a trouble, especially for the less common languages.

Other than that, your framework looks really good. :-)

My self asessment for Mandarin - which presumably will be my language of choice, will be super easy: I
will say like Manuel in Fawlty Towers: I know nooothing!

Otherwise the proposal seems great!

Are readymade flashcards allowed?
Thinking about japanese or mandarin.
No way I'm willing to do handwritten japanese or mandarin signs :-)

Edit: Spelling error

Does Anki count as active learning if we use it to review only the words that we learn in assimil lessons?

I'm really not sure what I'd sign up with... I'll have to think of something as this challenge sounds very exciting!

I may try Le Vietnamien Sans Peine! Does anyone have experience with this course?   Can't wait!
