I am currently in Chengdu, China. I am an English teacher here. So I hope to capitalize on this opportunity to master Mandarin.
I read irrationale's log on this forum where he managed to master Mandarin in 2 years in America. My goal is to be at least that good in two years.
This is my plan.
Materials
- Pimsleur
- New Practical Chinese Reader
- FSI
- Chinese people
- Chinese radio
- Anki
I am going to start over Pimsleur from unit 2. I've done it previously, but I got diverted from it mid way. So I'm going to start over from unit 2 and focus on learning the characters, inputting into anki.
Around the same time I will begin the FSI modules. I'll use Audacity to copy audio samples into anki. I'll have a lot of time spent on the buses here, and between classes, so I want to find some podcasts of Chinese talk radio to listen to. If anyone knows any resources for that, let me know.
I want to put in at least 3 formal hours of study and review a day.
All advice, questions and comments are welcome and encouraged.

Well I'm up to Pimsleur II.6 now. Its a good program, and its a good thing I restarted this far back because I forgot a lot.
Today I also finished my first ESL classes. Its quite a bit different than what I imagined. I think my Chinese might be better than their English. Thats not very good.
I need to seize more opportunities to speak though. Moving to another country doesn't force you to learn or use the language as much as I thought. My own shyness gets in the way as well. Today I had spent like 20 minutes in traffic with a Chinese, and I barely spoke. A combination of not having anything to say, and not having any way to say it.

Today I made a video in Mandarin. It is scripted. And I already noticed several mistakes. But what does everyone think of my progress, and where do I need improvements?

I started FSI today. Started with the Module 2 BIO since I looked over the orientation module and there wasn't much substance there. Mod 2 Unit 1 was simple.
One minor point of frustration though is that terms like comrade aren't used anymore. Also the recordings aren't very good quality.
My speaking is getting better, I had some good conversations with my students today in Mandarin. It felt like I was speaking, which is good.
学习,学习,在学习!

I noticed you are going to be utilizing some of the same resources I plan on using, were
you looking at Irrationale's log as well?
